Radio stunt backfires for Kyle & Jackie O

A radio stunt conducted by former Big Brother hosts went very, very wrong when a 14yo girl admitted she had been raped.

kyle jackieFormer Big Brother hosts -and Australian Idol judge- Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, are under fire today for a comedy stunt that misfired on their radio show on 2DAY FM.

The stunt saw a 14yo girl answering “lie detector” style questions from put to her by her mother, live on radio.

“Have you ever had sex?” the mother asked.

The 14-year-old replied: “I’ve already told you the story about this … and don’t look at me and smile because it’s not funny.”

Amid on-air pauses the girl blurted out, “Oh OK … I got raped when I was 12 years old.”

Amid stunned silence, Kyle Sandilands then replied, “Right … is that the only experience you’ve had?”

With the moment clearly in disarray, it took Jackie O to apologise and abort the stunt, offering access to counselling for the girl.

Jenny Parkes, 2DayFM general manager issued a statement saying: “All due care and consideration was given to the family and clearly we didn’t know anything about the incident.

“The moment we became aware of it was live on air and we shut it down as soon as we possibly could.

“As is only appropriate, we are offering all the assistance we can to the family, including counselling, in what is of course an extraordinarily difficult situation.”

According to Sydney Morning Herald, the girl had told Sandilands, “I’m scared … it’s not fair,” before the questions started.

You can hear some of the sequence here.

Sandilands, who regularly co-hosts his show from a base in LA, is due to return as a judge on Australian Idol next month.

  1. 1. The mother (who found out about the alledged rape a week before the radio stunt) should never have let her child go on the radio – reguardless of whether she believed her daughter or not. Disgrace.

    2. The radio station and hosts – shame on you for allowing a 14 year old to be questioned about sex and drugs. She is a child. Disgrace.

  2. What if the girl was actually making up the rape allegation?

It’s not as if teenagers never lie & love to make their parents squirm.
What a great place to do it & throw it back in Mum’s face!

And before you over zealous woman shoot me down in flames for suggesting such a deplorable thought, think back to the “chicka chicka boom” girl. Everyone wanted to & did believe her story until it was found out to be false.

  3. regardless of what the young girl would or would not have revealed, the fact remains that the station and its hosts put to air a live broadcast of a fourteen year old child being interrogated about her sex life, against her will. This is child abuse. No question.
Even if she had not revealed the rape incident, it would still be child abuse.
She is a minor. Sex with a fourteen year old is rape whether or not it is consentual, as a child is not able to give consent under the law. So any revelation regarding any sexual experience would have been discussing rape. So what were they thinking?
Kyle and Jackie’s “apology” was horribly phony and angled towards covering their own asses and downplaying the incident. This is beyond “controversy”, they are deplorable, cruel, heartless and abusive. I love Hamish & Andy but will boycott 2day FM from now on as I simply can’t condone the station’s treatment of this poor child.

  4. when Kyle’s next off in LA don’t let him back into the Country!
some many people to blame on this one though, it’s not just Kyle & JackieO to be fair – but how could anyone involved with this excuse for ‘entertainment’ let this get to this stage!

  5. Very bad judgement call all round.

They probably thought it was OK because the girl’s mother was there, therefore parental permission etc.

But asking a 14-y-old about sex on live radio – what could possibly go wrong eh?

  6. Umm when did the legal age change to 14 yrs old….umm isnt this some sort of offence…could it be held as promoting child sex…it certainly wasnt entertaining, the incident aside and their (Kyle and Jackie 0 – where the O stands for OMG) reaction unbelievable, but when do they that asking sexually orientated questions to a minor being entertaining, besides we know there is a culture for that age group already doing this, but c’mon!!!

  7. now they are blaming the media for the contriversy. it’s typical of those 2 idiot’s. passing the balme onto someone else. they shyould have stopped it in the first place

  8. I’ve lived in 11 major countries, and I am passionate about radio. This is the worst radio station, I must admit, in the whole wide world I’ve ever come across.
The lady host admits having sex at the age of thirteen on air. Nice example being set for our young kids and coming generations.
The male host has no control over his mouth, and usually poo comes out when he speaks.
I really hope there is at least one person, not full of shit at the Australian Media & Broadcasting Authority who takes appropriate action, making this an example for others to learn from, as a good lesson.
Shame on The Australian Media & Broadcasting Authority to still let this be on air. Unbelievable.

  9. that was just sickening to listen to, that mum doesn’t seem to care about what happened to her daughter at all, just sweeps it under the rug and ignores it and wants to know what her sex life is ignoring that. and she says she never even got her child to counselling, so probably never took her to the police to report it either. then she takes her daughter onto some radio show to grill her about her sex life as if she is promiscuous of something, what ever her behaviour may or may not be it is surely influenced by this damaging childhood experience. that mother has no right to judge her daughter, especially when she has failed to get her any help. and why is a radio show quizing children under the age of consent about sex any way.

  10. How is quizzing a minor about her sex life entertaining?

The pathetic segment blows up in Kyle’s face and the best follow up question the experienced announcer could come up with was

“Right … is that the only experience you’ve had?”

It saddens me that this talentless wombat is still on the air while a comedic genius like Tony Martin isn’t.

Tony delivered great ratings without exploiting his audience.

  11. I am surprised how many people are defending Kyle and Jackie O. Forcing (she clearly didn’t want to be there) a 14 year old on a lie-detector on live radio and asking her questions about her sex life is vile.
Doing it live is dangerous, they could of at least pre-recorded the interview in case something like this came out.
Her mum is an idiot but a broadcaster is 100% responsible for what they put to air.

  12. It wasn’t appropriate what Kyle said but maybe he was shocked and surprised. What Jackie O did was quite reasonable and good thing she did. Should blame it on the mother, she herself knew about that fact so she shouldn’t have asked in the first place. I’ve listened to Kyle & Jackie O and it’s not the first time they did this, but just this time the situation took a turn.

  13. oops, not sure why the mother would ask given she knows her daughter history

not sure, about the “Right … is that the only experience you’ve had?” however

  14. I don’t think they could predict what would happen.

But it is dodgy to force an unwilling 14 year old to answer questions about her sex life on national radio. There could be consent or privacy concerns.

  15. i’ve listened to Kyle and Jackie for years now and the parents bringing in kids for the lie detector is nothing new, usually a parent thinks their kids is taking drugs or wagging and it comes out on air. this is just the first time it got really out of hand. they always change the names of the participants and have councilers to refer them on to.

if you listen to the interview in full you know the mum had to see this coming

and whilst kyle and jackie mightn’t be in the right with this situation having everyone passing comment on it on shows like ACA or the 7pm project can’t help this girl’s situation. but at the end of the day you’ve really got to wonder what the hell that mother was thinking…

  16. i dont think Kyle Sandilands did anything wrong, he just did a interview with the website the punch, David maybe you could post a new article, but overall the mum should of never asked the question, she knows the answer all ready

  17. i listen to kyle and jackie o and after hearing this, i am disgraced at the mother.
kyle blurted out the wrong thing, but thats normal and first reactions are mostly wrong. jackie o handled the situation responsibly.

  18. Who was in control of the dump button and why didn’t they hit it. Every live to air broadcast uses the 7second delay. Australian Idol prepare for a backlash !

  19. Nobody enjoys an opportunity for slagging out on Sandilands more than I, but does this story really have a place on TV Tonight?

It harms the integrity of this site as a valuable news source, David.

    1. Absolutely. How performers behave off screen affects their brand. Just ask Jodi Gordon, Andrew O’Keefe this. If it was just a radio war stoush then no, but is major news today just before Idol launches.

  20. Note, Kyle’s response to the girl answering “….is that the only time…” and Jackie O realising to pull the plug. Only after mentioning counselling does Kyle suddenly chirp in about it aswell. However, stupid stupid mother.

  21. The mother is to blame but Kyle & Jackie O should also be blamed for facilitating this nonsense. No one needs to hear about the sex life of minors on radio anyway.

  22. @Simon: I agree with you.
I’m no Kyle supporter, but the blame should be put squarly on the mother, and not the him in this case. I’m sure that it took him by complete surprise, and sometimes the first reaction isn’t always the one you mean.

What kind of a mother would knowingly subject her child to that, particularly seeing as she knew what had happened to her. She really must lack empathy, compassion and care for her child.
