Returning: Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?

Rove McManus is back with a new class of kids, coming soon to Monday nights.

fifthgThe return season of Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? will launch at 7:30pm Monday July 27th.

As always Rove McManus is back with a new class of kids (sorry, sixth graders, you’re banished to the side of the room with the old cast of Skins.. what a heartless industry!).

Fifth Grader replaces Recruits which finishes on July 20.

The return of the show effectively gives Roving Enterprises back to back shows on TEN, following The 7pm Project.

This marks the third season of the show, licensed from Mark Burnett Productions.

  1. Tasmnian Devil – I dont really think UK and NZ will care that much that we have opted to keep the american name and btw, I went to primary school in the UK, its called “Primary 5” or “P5” there, not grade 5.

  2. @ David,

Yeah Philosophisationing is supposed to be a gag, nut it’s not funny at all. It’s so lame. Anyway, I guess the name doesn’t matter, as long as the show is good.

  3. @ Qwerty,

I doubt Rove or Ten care about the English language. When watching MasterChef, and the come back from an ad, the graphic on the screen says “masterchef australia.” If they were grammatically correct, the M and C would be capitals, and the A in Australia should be a capital as well.

Also, on Rove, their is a dodgy segment called “Philosophisationing.” I doubt that is even a word.

    1. Grammar is dodgy across the board. How many shows drop the quesion mark on titles? Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? Deal or No Deal? At least Fifth Grader adds it. The point of Philiophisationing is at least that it’s a gag. Ultimately, the real grammar that we should be addressing is typos in captions, especially in news etc, not this.

  4. I am looking forward to this show coming back. I went to a couple of the tapings and it was hilarious. Rove was a lot more risque than ever before and the new batch of kids were terrific.
What a nice way to start the week!

  5. Good on Ten for having some success with locally made shows like Rove, TBYG, Before The Game and trying new ones like 7PM – but these shows all have the same faces on them! Come on Ten show some diversity in your on-screen talent. Dave Hughes for instance is going to be on 3 shows – Rove, Before The Game and 7PM! Does Rove only allow his close circle of mates to appear on any shows he makes for Ten?? Spread your casting wings a bit, Rove!

  6. @Tasmanian Devil
Yes but ‘Are you smarter than a Grade 5er’ is linguistically wrong. Using proper english they are not Grade fivers they are Fifth Graders or Year/Grade Five Children/students.
“Are you smarter than a Grade Five Student” Has less ring and more clunk to it than “Talking about your generation”

  7. In my hometown of Hong Kong, the program is also called Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? Hosted by TV actor/singer Leo Ku (kids call him “Mr Ku” in the show), it is shown on TVB on Saturday nights. It rated so well that it has been renewed for a second season. However, all episodes are “celebrity editions”, with the general public excluded from entering the competition.
My family enjoy the Australian version and I can’t wait to see the program when it returns.

  8. @gerrard, Ten is too American- there is a perfectly good name for the show, Are you smarter than a 10 year old, which is used in the UK and NZ where it is called Grade 5, not 5th Grade. That’s the case in Australia too, yet ten are too thick to realise it. Imagine what UK and NZ must think of us!

  9. I think having it at 7.30 Monday has a better flow than any other day and should do better than Idol was doing in the slot last year. 7pm, into 5th Grader, into GNW, makes sense to me.

  10. yeah, I dont see this as Monday 7.30pm fare to be honest, I dont mind it as a bit of light fluff..saying that, if 7pm project goes well that it might do alright after, its an alternative at least to the shit house sitcoms on 7 & 9 at the time…

  11. Oh Gawd no! I hate this show!

And I know it’s based on the American version, but do they have to call it “the Fifth Grade,” and the “Fifth Graders”?
This is Australia and no one here says that. Just leave it as Grade/ Year 5, and even change the name to “Grade/ Year Fivers”.

The 7PM Project, I don’t think it’ll work. As the cast isn’t that great. I think it’ll rate well for a few weeks, then people’ll just get sick of it and especially Hughsy. We should just leave him to once a week on Rove.

  12. it’s a fun show, but it’s far from a show i’d go out of my way to watch.

Mon 7:30 is quite a high profile slot for a show that has never really done well. i though it would go back to thursdays.

  13. I don’t even know why TEN renewed Fifth Grader for 2009. It’s a cute show and all but it could barely manage 800k last time it was on. Maybe TEN are hoping a new day will help, or maybe its demos were really good.
