Soap and substances don’t mix

This year there is quite a bit of attention being given to the lifestyles of young soapie actors.

homeawayYesterday a former Home And Away actor, Bryan Wiseman, spilled the beans on some of the reckless, off-screen culture of young soapie stars who fall under the spell of a ‘glamorous’ lifestyle.

Wiseman played Dr. John Wilson from 1988 to 2003.

In an up-front interview he told the Sunday Telegraph drugs were commonplace amongst younger castmates, and readily accessible to them when they hit the town. It was an interview sure to ruffle feathers at Seven. Wiseman detailed a culture of late night partying before shooting scenes the next day, as well as substances at the Logies.

He said he was surprised the issue hadn’t come to light before.

In fact it has.

During the 2005 courtcase of unfair dismissal for actor Shane Connor by Neighbours, the soap’s wholesome image was tarnished by reports of drug addiction and alcohol abuse among the cast.

This year there have been several headlines connected to the personal lives of young soapie stars. Many tell just one side of the story.

But  as former Neighbours actor Blair McDonough commented yesterday in a separate and unrelated article, such headlines can hurt some careers more than others.

Commenting on Andrew O’Keefe’s survival after a public incident last year, he said,”Andrew was OK because he is at the top of his game, but the lesser lights get made a mockery of and it’s all over.”

  1. And who was in a corner with a bikie worried other people were trying to get them?
    oh i see its about money, its always about money,
    ratings = ads = money.

  2. cant say im really surprised by this at all….when I used to go out on the dance party scene in Sydney in my younger days I was always bumping into people from H&A and it was clear that they were doing more than drinking…like it or not, drugs are a part of society these days and even people in the spotlight such as footballers and soap stars are going to dabble…

  3. It isn’t a first, so many young stars turn to drugs, and I’m not suprised that majority of the younger cast members of a show like this have managed to stay out of the negative spotlight of publicity,.
