WIN echoes the love for GO!

WIN confirms GO! for August, echoing the enthusiasm (literally) of Nine.

go992WIN Television has confirmed the launch of GO! on Channel 80 for its viewers in August.

In a Press Release issued today, WIN has talked up the arrival of the channel with as much enthusiasm as Nine.

In fact the same quotes attributed to David Gyngell at Nine are now attributed to Andrew Gordon, WIN’s Executive Chairman.

“This new channel is a natural evolution for WIN and for free-to-air television,” Mr Gordon said.

“And that’s the key word – FREE. It means that within weeks our viewers will have access, free of charge, to a second channel offering quality and a great deal of first-run programs.

“It’s a WIN for our audience because it offers more diversity and substantially wider viewing choices than ever before, at no cost.”

He also reiterated Gyngell’s line about Warner Brothers content.

“Warners produce the best international programming across-the-board, no question. And WIN viewers will see the best of it both on our existing primary channel and the new GO! multi-channel,” he said.

No exact airdate was issued by WIN, but Nine is espected to ‘soft launch’ on August 9 with a full launch in September. There is some speculation it could move later to 88, though this is unconfirmed.

  1. the freeview site has been updated and cheddar, troy and josh are right on the money, GO will be on the HD WIN channel at first and then move to a separate SD in october. the website also confirms that NBN will be getting it.

  2. Tracy, Imparja is not likely to beam GO! until they have upgraded to digital. I understand that Imparja has not upgraded to digital yet left alone applying with SC Central for a future channel 10 station for the outback. It will probably be a long time before GO! is beamed to the outback the way Imparja operates at this rate.

I can thank my lucky stars that Imparja is not beaming in Darwin. From what I have heard about the latest reports about Imparja I do not want a bar of Imparja in my area.

  3. Just read this over at DTV Forum
“Just mentioned now on WIN news confirmation of GO for August on the HD channel and then from October on a second SD channel… ”
So just like Chedder said below, start on HD then move to SD.

  4. WIN last night said on their news that it GO! will start on channel 80 and move to SD in october. No need to panic people 🙂
People in regional areas should be calling their local WIN office and thank them. Look at the absolute disregard the Southern cross shows to regionals. Hats off to WIN for not leaving us behind.

  5. @Cheddar…you are right on the money…exactly what will happen…and don’t worry bout the knockers on this site….its very quickly becoming a site for whinging and not constructive enquiry….. but my fault i keep coming back and reading it

  6. You have to laugh.

From just one announcement, so many of you have drawn such certain pesimistic & annoyed conclusions. Despite what some may say, there maybe a quite good reason for putting Go! on WIN’s Chl 80 besides just to pi** you off!

It could as simple that they don’t have a third service platform yet (like Nine’s 99) so they’re using 80 in the meantime – that makes sense.

And if this is the case, wouldn’t you rather have a whole new channel of programming rather than just some occasional native HD of the same program on the SD channel, like presently occurs on HD 80?

Let’s wait & see. Maybe WIN will start their third channel afterward & Go! will then migrate to that new channel (88?) & HD will return to 80.

Anf for those lamenting Go! being on HD 80 & only having an SD PVR, don’t blame WIN, blame yourself for buying a device that right from the start of digital TV was destined to be obsolete.

  7. Channel 80? Thats pointless! WinHD is the best for movies and the only regional station that does 5.1 sound so it will be a shame to lose it for a fully SD channel. It would make much more sense for it to be put on 88 and keep 80 how it is.

  8. Just a theory, WIN could still launch GO! on channel 80 (WIN HD) because WIN probably would have already shown enough HD content to last the year. If this is the case then they won’t have to show any HD content till next year. So perhaps WIN could be planning to have GO! on ch 80 till the new joint ABC/WIN facility is up and running, then when the facility starts operating WIN could then switch GO! to ch 88 leaving WIN HD to return to ch 80.

  9. I believe the fact that 7 are number 1 means they are in no hurry. I heard a rumour (forget where) that they may do something with the extra channel in October, on or near the 2nd anniversary of 7HD Oct 15. Also maybe waiting to see how ch 9’s goes.

  10. So I’m confused if GO! is 99 on ch9 and not HD are they going to waste their WIN HD one a 576 feed from ch9?

I know there are a lot of questions since the ACA thing went to air, I just wish Nine would answer them.

At least it’s better than Seven, who is yet to tell us anything about their 2nd SD plans… if they want to remain number one then ch7 needs to get off their butt and do something!

  11. Every TV station in Australia is required to broadcast at least 20 hours of HD content a week. That includes all WIN owned stations across Australia.

Go! will not be broadcast in HD.

So to keep HD content requirements, WIN stations will have to keep broadcasting Nine HD as well. This is why Southern Cross owned Ten affiliates had to launch One in HD not SD – for the HD requirements.

Go! will not be in HD for any WIN broadcast area, as Nine is not producing Go! in HD in the first place

  12. 1. Expect a delay with NBN taking on GO. They are not owned by 9, just an affiliate. NBN do not currently and never have offered 9HD breakaways and have even stated they have no plans to take on 9’s extra channels. Hoping this will change in time for GO.
2, As for WIN, if the regionals have GO on 80, then it will not be HD as the feed from 9 is not HD as 99 is an SD channel. And as WIN owns 9 in Adelaide and Perth, they will have GO, but regional WIN may be a different story although it is sounding positive for them,
    3. Due to areas like the Gold Coast and Central Coast where you get both city and regional TV, regional LCNs must be different to those of cities so as not to cause confusion with channels in those areas. eg ch 9 is 9, 90 and 99, NBN is 8, 80 and 81, Seven is 7 and 70, Prime is 6 and 60, SC10 is 5 with ONE HD on 50 while 10 has channels 1,11,12 for ONE and 10 for the main 10 channel.

  13. Great, another channel for Win to use their utterly pathetic excuse of a watermark on.

Why oh why don’t WIN get clean sports feeds from 9, or just call themselves WIN9?

  14. @Brian from Tassie – that’s the point I’ve been making for reginal viewers, here we only get ONE HD, no SD version on SC TEN, the same might happen for GO! meaning my $500 LG recorder is next to useless as it doesn’t have a HD tuner, just SD like the majority on DVD/HDD recorders.

You need to spend close to double that for a HD recorder, even Tivo is about $700 and that lacks a DVD recorder to copy programs to DVD…
