A behind the scenes doco on the Sydney Dance Company is one of Foxtel's first dance specials under its new sponsorship deal.

This behind the scenes look at Sydney Dance Company follows Rafael Bonachela’s first production as Artistic Director. is narrated by Kerry Armstrong.

Filmmakers Tim Slade and Joanna Buggy, of Vast Productions, began shooting in 2007 in the aftermath of the tragic death of Tanja Liedtke, who had been on the verge of commencing her role as SDC Artistic Director – a position previously held by Graeme Murphy for 30 years.

SDC Executive Director Noel Staunton engaged three internationally renowned guest choreographers to create one work each during 2008, from a blank canvas. One of these, Spanish-born Bonachela (pictured), applied for and succeeded in being appointed to the sought after role of Artistic Director.

The documentary follows the process as Bonachela and the dancers bring his production, We Unfold, to fruition in its critically acclaimed and sellout season earlier this year.

Director and co-producer Tim Slade said: “The film, overall, is a celebration of what human beings can achieve and the joy and pain that a ‘calling’, like being a dancer or a choreographer, will bring.”

Airing as the first program in Foxtel’s principal sponsorship of the dance company Brian Walsh said: “Blank Canvas explores the creative and physical forces at work within Sydney Dance Company. As principal sponsor of SDC, Foxtel is proud to share with our viewers this insight into the lives of these amazing performers.”

The network has previously sponsored the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and screens the Helpmann Awards annually.

Blank Canvas is Slade and Buggy’s third release under the banner of Vast Productions.

It screens on Bio. on Saturday October 3, at 7.30pm.
