Airdate: Waltz with Bashir

This animated doco has been lauded by the Cannes Film Festival, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and top critics awards.

waltz-with-bashirSBS ONE presents the acclaimed Israeli documentary Waltz with Bashir on Tuesday, 1 September at 10.00pm.

Based on a true story, this is one man’s journey to uncover the secrets of his past, and understand his future.

In the film an old friend tells director Ari Folman about a recurring nightmare he’s been having for the past two years, in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. The two men conclude that there is a connection between the nightmare and their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties.

However, Ari is unsettled by the fact that he can no longer recall that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, he embarks on a journey to retrieve his lost memory so as to discover the truth about that time and more importantly, about himself.

The film took 4 years to complete.

  1. Absolutely stunning film, both as animation and in theme. This said, there’s one bit that I doubt will air uncut on SBS (the scene with an animated adult film), though the film can survive just fine without it really. Saw this at the cinema with some friends and none of us were prepared for just how devastating the final scenes would be, which really drive home the horrors of war.
