Dr Kerryn Phelps in Last Chance Surgery

Former AMA president Dr Kerryn Phelps returns to TV to front a new medical factual series for Channel Seven.

Kerryn-PhelpsFormer president of the Australian Medical Association Dr Kerryn Phelps will host a new Channel Seven medical series Last Chance Surgery.

The factual, to premiere in September, features “intimate and inspirational stories of patients’ determination to beat the odds.”

“Most of us will never know what it feels like to be faced with one last chance at a life-saving or a life-changing medical procedure,” said Dr. Phelps.

“The patients and their families featured in Last Chance Surgery do. And they face this challenge with tremendous courage. Their strength alone will amaze you.

“It’s a real privilege to share their experience. The compassion and skill of their surgeons is inspiring as they work to save the lives of their patients who look to them for hope.”

Episodes will include a 17-year-old who visits neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, and a 20 year old who has a malignant tumour in his spine and must endure an eighteen hour operation to save him from becoming paralysed.

Dr. Phelps was previously a host of the ABC series Everybody and a presenter on Nine’s 1992 series, Sex.

The Southern Star Entertainment series is produced by former Nine weather presenter Majella Wiemers.

  1. I just watched a re-run of this show…..and noted Prof. Bill……
There was something vaguely familiar about his voice and manner. And then I realized I shared a house with him in the early 80s in Greenwich for 18mths. He was a registrar at RNS at the time.
Good to see he has reached the top of his profession.
He was always dedicated and passionate about his work.

I presume he may not be able to use his real surname for professional reasons relating to self promotion.

Does anyone know if the little girl Shannon survived her surgery with Dr Teo?

my father knows Shannon’s family and from the last update that i recieved from my father, Shannon is still with us and everyday she continues to amaze everyone

  3. I also had Bill Sears for back surgery four years ago – he was brilliant ! I think the reason he’s incognito is because he had already almost closed his books when I saw him. I was extremely lucky to be operated on by him. He obviously doesn’t want too many people to be disappointed when they call for an appointment.

  4. my girlfriend has a medical condition called cystic hygroma was woundering if there is any surgery out now that would be able to help her its mostly in her cheek

  5. I was also very suprised to see that Prof Bill Sears was using the name Prof Bill Watkins. He operated on my back and did a fantastic job. I cannot thank him enough for what he did for me. These days I can lead a normal life and do all the things that I could do before my back problems. Thank heavens that skilled people like him exist that care.

  6. Dr Bill Sears has operated on my spine 3 times and has saved my bacon on each occasion. He is a brilliant surgeon and a wonderful human being, so why not refer to him by his real name, instead of ‘Professor Bill Watkins’ as he is called on the show?

  7. Those “knockers” of Dr Charlie Teo, dont you wish you had his skills he has given life where others put it in the “too hard basket” Australia is blessed to have such a surgeon of his calibre he is a wonderful human being with blessed skills. Envy, jeolousy etc…. should be left out of medicine the most important person is the patient, surgeons leave your egos at home.

  8. You know, it is a difficult and emotional programme to watch but, the inspiration these people provide and the dignity in which they fight their illnesses is something to be applauded. I only hope the 17yo girl and the 20yo man from last night’s episode have success, and I wish them and their families all the best in this world. It is not at all easy when a loved one becomes so ill. xoxox

  9. Is it really necessary to give doctors a false name in this series – it was obviously Bill Sears and not Bill Watkins who operated on Jesse. Bill Sears has operated on my back on four occasions so I know him pretty well. He is a great guy and excellent surgeon.

  10. I personally knew the family and the young 17 year old girl that battled a war that you as a healthy strong person ,would never know …These are real life people fighting for life ,unlike soaps and sitcoms where the actors go home at the end of the day.,My heart goes out to all of these families …for those that have lost a loved one and had to watch helplessly by ..I hope you find peace ..for those that are still fighting ,may you find the strength to go on …

  11. I can’t wait for Seven to start filming a factual show about the struggle people has to suffer when taking a crowded lift, I reckon it’ll be a very successful television viewing. I’ve heard they are already auditioning for casting. They are already looking for 10 most crowded lifts across Australia!

  12. @ Jerome

I dont think so. They are currently filming in the ICU at the Alfred for the new show, so it would have to be quite a fast turn around time, much faster than for Medical Emergency which filmed at the start of the year and is still yet to be shown

  13. Seven could make a reality series that follows the behind the scenes making of Sunrise – would deliver what everyone wants – more David Koch. Not.

  14. do we really need another reality medical series ?

next thing im sure is another new reality cop show…….followed by another new reality beach-patrol show….
