Drama funding in a Tangle

The Showtime Channel could be unable to greenlight more drama if it doesn't resolve funding issues with Screen Australia over Cloudstreet.

Tangle7The Showtime Channel could be unable to greenlight a second series of Tangle (pictured) and a fourth series of Satisfaction if it is forced to raise its licence fee for Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet episodes from $400,000 to more than $520,000.

The news follows funding body Screen Australia’s decision not to provide 15%of the $10 million budget for the TV adaptation of Cloudstreet. The licence fee to its producer, Screentime, is believed to be too low.

SA guidelines require a local free-to-air or pay-TV pre-sale agreement of not less than 30% of the budget, with a floor price of not less than $400,000 per hour, according to The Australian.

Initially, Showtime and global television distributor Liberty Global International were expected to finance the entire $10m project.

The project was dismissed by SA’s production investment division as ineligible and was not given to the SA board for consideration.

  1. If that is so David, hopefully more of it then. Given what you say, I look forward with enthusiasm to seeing it. But a well done adaptation of “Cloudstreet” could be iconic Aussie TV. So hopefully heaven and earth will be moved to make it happen.

  2. Then don’t do any more “Satisfaction” or “Tangle”, I say. “Cloudstreet” is a modern Australian classic and it’s screen adaptation should clearly take precedence over the tawdry doings of “Satisfaction” at the very least. Having not seen “Tangle”, I can’t comment on that. Just cough up the money Showtime and let us see something really special.
