Network TEN and FremantleMedia Australia today confirmed the worst secret in the biz with Sony executive Jay Dee Springbett names as Australian Idol‘s new judge.
Springbett appeared in Sunday night’s show as part of panel of experts grilling the Idol contestants.
In his role as Senior Director of A&R for Sony Records, he has extensive experience developing emerging talent, first in the UK and in Australia since 2004.
He has worked with big names including Rogue Traders, Jessica Mauboy, Karnivool, and Cassie Davis to name a few.
Programmer David Mott said, “We had no idea we would be looking for a new judge this year, luckily for us the best qualified person for the job was right in front of us. Jay Dee brings to Idol a wealth of experience in nurturing talent and helping them achieve international chart success.”
A somewhat nervous Springbett last night told host Andrew G he was excited by the new role.
“No-one’s more shocked than I am of getting the call. But I’m looking forward to working with the judges, getting in there working with the contestants. I work with talent everyday. It’s an extension of that for me.”
Springbett, who replaces dumped judge Kyle Sandilands, appears live in the Top 24 shows this week from Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm.

@ Simon, if you knew anything about music, then you would hardly quote the name “Karnivool” and follow it up by saying that “Australian music is pathetic recently – nothing ever groundbreaking or anything that will affect the music industry”. There’s very few other bands out there are are willing to experiment and push the boundaries in the way Karnivool are. Nor are there many bands with 12 minute songs and virtually no commercial radio airplay who manage to take out the nation’s no. 2 bestselling album. Hearing that Jay Dee has worked with them has increased my respect for him tenfold.
Nathan from The Extra Source, despite finding your comment slightly racist since Australia is an extremely Multi Cultural country and I thought all this crap about it being “Aussie Idol” was done and dusted, did you ever think that it might have something to do with the fact that Australia has a very limited amout of talent and that anyone who has had a half decent success overseas, Darren Hayes, Tina Arena, Delta Goodrem, Kylie and Danni might have better things to do with 6months of there life than judge Aussie Idol. I think JD is a good choice cos he actully has industry experience, still do we need Diko’s?

All these comments after just a couple of minutes on air and not even in his full official role. How about we actually see what he can do before we judge him.

…and what an anti climax. This gimmick to reinvigorate a waning reality show isn’t going to work. I think it’s the judges that are now carrying this format, because it certainly aint the “talent”. They’ve just replaced Kyle, who although a d***head, oozed personality, with this Jay Dee who doesn’t even seem remotely interesting.

I’m with you Janey, we are multicultural so it seems fitting, an accent doesn’t mean your not australian. Marcia’s been here longer than she was ever in the US and Dicko’s a citizen. Seems our kids might get a better shot overseas with the this kind of access???
@Cher Ten could easily have gotten rid of Kyle before shooting began if they had wanted to. It would have been far less messy.

BTW…I think this was planned all along. 10 was waiting for a slight slip from Kyle to get rid of him and Jay Dee was planned right from the so called Exec interviews, this was our introduction to Jay Dee…Kyle did just what 10 hoped.
Agreed Nathan, not one has an aussie accent. But none the less, Jay is pretty spunky, so that makes up for it.
Marcia’s been here since she was 16 and Dicko is now an Australian citizen. We’re just a young multi-cultural country…and I think it’s great to have diversity.

This guy looks okay…but has anyone realised it’s International Idol… Dicko and Jay Dee are poms and Marcia’s from the US…what happend to Aussie Idol, aren’t our judges good enough??
What happened to citizenship, isn’t that good enough either? What’s the point in having it then?
