Meet the very animated Doctor Who

First glimpse of BBC's short animations which will see the Doctor arrive at Roswell in the US.

dreamlandThe BBC has released the first image of the animated Doctor from a new animation, Dreamland, due for broadcast in the UK later this year.

The short, six-part animations will see the Doctor – played by David Tennant – arrive at Roswell in the US.

During a visit to a local diner he stumbles upon a mysterious alien artefact that leads him on a mission to rescue Rivesh Mantilax from the threat of the Viperox and the clutches of the American military.

Joining Tennant will be Georgia Moffett (Doctor Who, Spooks) in the role of Cassie Rice – the Doctor’s new animated companion.

David Warner (Wallander, Hogfather) also stars as the leader of the ruthless Viperox.

Dreamland is being executive produced by Russell T. Davies, Julie Gardner and Piers Wenger, with Gary Russell as director and is written by Phil Ford (Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures)

Davies said: “Dreamland is a remarkable project and I’m thrilled with it. Phil Ford is a wonderful writer and promises to send the Doctor into a whole new visual dimension.”

  1. Point taken GuanoLad, but with CGI, they could also strecth the possibilities. Doctor Who would be a great launchpad to do this. It is only a matter of time before we see a live action series totally done as CGI. As such, I won’t be watching animation, as it will be more likley skewed/written for 5 year olds.

The point of animation is to do things you can’t in live-action, like exaggeration. Realism isn’t its intent, so the more stylised you can make it, the more you can play with it, and stretch its possibilities.
