Tiger Woods to roar on Nine, FOX.

After earlier claims the rights of a golf tournament was too pricey, Nine and FOX Sports have sewn up a deal.

TigerWoodsNine has signed a joint deal for the Australian Masters golf tournament in Melbourne in November, with FOX Sports.

Earlier this year it was feared the event featuring Tiger Woods might not be seen on Free to Air television after networks deemed a $3m price tag as being too expensive.

At the time Nine CEO David Gyngell said: “There’s no doubt Tiger is a superstar but they are trying to sell the deal to cover the tournament for the next three years. Tiger is only signed up for the first year. If we could have done a one-year deal it would be a different story.

“None of the stations have got the sort of money (managing group) IMG are asking for. It would be good value with Tiger this November, but golf is hard work for advertising revenue.”

Since those public statements the parties must have met somewhere in the middle, but no word on how long the deal is for.

Jeffrey Browne, from Nine said: “Our brand is built on bringing the best world class events to Australian viewers and the Australian Masters fits perfectly, preceding our summer of International Cricket and our Winter Olympic Games coverage from Vancouver.”

Nine will also incorporate the Today show into its Australian Masters coverage, featuring interviews with key players and showcasing the course at Kingston Heath. Can we presume an OB week with Karl on the green?

The event takes place from 12 – 15 November, 2009.

  1. no id say nine will cover thursday and friday live, they are happy to can their daytime lineup when theres test cricket on so i wouldnt see it any differently with this.

  2. I’m guessing Fox Sports will show the first 2 days and Nine will show it on Saturday and Sunday. They’ll be praying Tiger makes the cut or doesn’t get injured before the event.
