Denton project: “The 7:15PM Reject”

There are 19 TV newcomers in Hungry Beast who will produce a half-hour of topical TV and daily web content.

AndrewDentonAt the end of the month Denton’s long awaited new project (aside from 30 Seconds) will air on the ABC.

Build around the theory that the media is a ‘hungry beast’ that devours everything and is never satisfied, the show has a whopping 19 newcomers to television. The new talent follows a nationwide call for young talent.

Each week, they will produce a half-hour of topical TV, as well as daily web content, bringing viewers news from outside the loop. Under the editorial instruction: “tell us something we don’t know,” they have been asked to find stories that aren’t part of the regular news cycle or to cover stories that are, from a fresh angle.

Denton is cautious in revealing what the show will contatin.

“Hard to say. I expect it’s going to be pretty rough around the edges to begin with – an unusual hybrid of journalism, comedy and… something else,” he says.

“These guys have been instructed to be rigourous in what they do, but also to take creative risks. I don’t think we’re really going to know what the show is until we see it. It probably won’t even start to achieve its potential til the end of its first season. When people ask the team what the show is going to be, they usually respond by saying it will be somewhere between The 7.30 Report and the 7PMProject – so think of it as the 7.15 Reject.”

A Hungry Beast website will feature new original stories from the Hungry Beast team each day. Hungry Beast on the web will also be a community where the audience can contribute stories to the website, and potentially have them broadcast on the TV program.

It will premiere at 9pm Wednesday September 30th on ABC1.

  1. ‘The 7:15 Reject’! That working title alone (if that’s what it is) is hilarious. I too am hoping for part Daily Show, part Chaser (minus stunts).

In promoting it to the public the ABC better remember to mention all the other successes he’s been behind.

  2. Be a bit unfair to compare 7pm project and this because ones airs every weekday and the other just once a week. Hope this is good though and up to Andrew Denton’s usual lofty standard.

  3. This will be the next Gruen Transfer, and most likely everything The 7pm Project aimed to be. Will it have the spark and creativity of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or CNNNN? Time will tell.
