Hey Hey it’s a marathon

Updated: Hey Hey's reunion will run for 2.5 hrs on September 29th -including Molly but without Ossie Ostrich.

mollyheyhey2The Hey Hey it’s Saturday reunion will run for a huge 2.5 hrs on Tuesday September 29th, as Nine tries to maximise viewer curiosity in the show.

The effect of that is likely to bring down its overall average figure, but if it hold viewers, could win the night for Nine. Expect reports the next day to lean towards the show’s peak rather than its average audience. Generally speaking, the longer a show goes, the lower its average.

The reunion will compete with shows including Packed to the Rafters and new episodes of NCIS and East West 101.

There was also a report on the weekend that suggested whilst Molly Meldrum had been given the all clear to appear by Seven, now Foxtel was exercising its contractual rights and preventing him from appearing.

Meldrum is signed to both networks.

Updated: Today’s Press Release indicates Molly is in, along with John Blackman, Wilbur Wilde, Red Symons, Livinia Nixon, Russell Gilbert, Plucka Duck. No mention of Ossie Ostrich.

  2. I think this show is going to be a roaring success. It is getting a lot of publicity at the moment on the television with the ads and in newspapers and magazines and of course, through the Facebook site that now has almost 200,000 fans. So many people are wanting this show.

I’m not confident enough to call a ratings average over the 2 and a half hours, but in terms of a peak, it will reach well over 2 million. I think Packed to the Rafters and NCIS should be no problem for this popular show.

Also, 2 and a half hours is not a lot. Does anyone remember that Australia Unites telethon with Eddie McGuire at the beginning of the year. That was a monster of a show, at almost five hours long, averaging about 1.1/1.2 million viewers. I’m sure that if Hey Hey went for that long it would have no worries eclipsing that figure.

  3. 2.5 hours does them no favours. that’s a lot to ask of viewers to stay for that length of time – so in effect it’ll show in the ratings.
Should have kept it short and sweet – the first hour will rate its socks off but there will be a decline when Rafters/NCIS airs. Silly, silly move.

  4. Ahh, Darryl Somers, a person who reached the comedy pinnacle by wearing false teeth and twinkling his eyelids as the camera zoomed in to the theme of the Twighlight Zone. As he has shown with his cringe-worthy performances on Dancing with the Stars he needs as many people surrounding him to deflect from his deficiencies and a big pink ostrich will do nicely.

For nostalgic reasons I think this show will rate well in the short term. However, as much as the Australian televisual landscape needs a live light entertainment show exhumations of the dead should be left to people in white lab coats not gaudy looking jumpers.
