Industry identity in health fight

Industry identity Sandra Levy, who has been an executive at both the ABC and Channel Nine, is taking leave from her current role as the head of the Australian Film Television and Radio School to battle a benign brain tumour.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald Ms Levy advised staff said she had been diagnosed with ”a non-life-threatening benign brain tumour” and is expected to be on leave for about six weeks.

”I am assured by the surgeon that the location of the tumour is well placed and consequently the complexity of the operation will be minimised as much as it can be,” she said. ”However, an appropriate period for convalescence and full recovery is required.”

Ms Levy was Head of Drama for the ABC from 1987 to 1989, where she tripled the drama output in each of her three years. She is credited with rescuing Kath & Kim, encouraging Andrew Denton to make Enough Rope and poaching Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton from SBS. As a producer and executive producer her credits include Police Rescue, McLeod’s Daughters, Palace of Dreams, Come in Spinner, Bodysurfer, GP and the films High Tide and The Well. She spent 10 years with Southern Star.

Ms Levy has also been a Board member of the FFC, AFI and the Sydney Theatre Company.

She will undergo surgery on Thursday.
