Insight: Coping with Baby

Jenny Brockie poses the question "Why does having a baby push some couples to the brink?"

jennybrockieOn tonight’s Insight, Jenny Brockie will pose the question “Why does having a baby push some couples to the brink?”

The forum will look at why the risk of depression and anxiety are heightened for women after birth.

One in ten men also suffer from mental illness directly after the birth. According to publicity nots, hormones don’t play as much of a part in peri natal depression (PND) as previously thought.

Men can feel overwhelmed by new fatherhood – a world that is completely unfamiliar. They are often unprepared for the demands of supporting their partners, being the sole economic provider, combined with sleeplessness and coping with a new born.

There aren’t any services for new fathers, should there be?

The federal government is injecting $85 million into screening and treatments for depression in pregnant women and new mothers. But will it fix the problem? And are women who suffer severe PND helped by this injection?

Are we doing enough to support men and women in the first year after a baby is born? What affect does depression have on the newborn?

It airs at 7:30pm Tuesday on SBS ONE.

  1. im a mother of 5 girls ,my husband and i have a great marriage ,but every now amd then i have panick attacks i would love not to fear going out or having to send my children to do the shopping as i cant go any where because of my anxiety people do not understand unless they have been there had one them selfs or seen someone have one.

  2. @SJ: So by that logic, you shouldn’t drive a car in case you have an accident, or get married in case you end up divorced, or eat food in case you get food poisoning…

I suffered PND with both my sons and, while I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, the risk of experiencing it for most people is far outweighed by the joy of being a parent once you are able to manage your symptoms with help from GPs, counsellors, family and friends, etc. However, I think you’d be doing any potential children a favour by not having them if that really is your attitude.

I only caught a few minutes of this last night so very pleased it’s repeated tonight on SBS2.

  3. Insight is such a great show & Jenny Brockie a wonderful host. Why oh why do commercial channels ignore this kind of programming?
Beauty & The Beast deserves another run & i always imagined KAK hosting a daytime forum type show in the mould of Trisha but maybe not as viscious.
