Lifestyle tipped for Seven digital

Seven executives have been telling media buyers their new digital channel is likely to be dominated by lifestyle shows.

sevenlogoThe Australian Financial Review reports that Seven’s new digital channel is likely to be dominated by Lifestyle shows.

Seven executives have been telling media buyers the new channel will launch within three months.

The channel has previously been rumoured to be toying with possible names including 7Plus and Plus7.

Seven’s channel will be the last in the commercial channels to join the current Freeview suite, but ABC3 is coming, sometime after late November.

    1. I’m yet to see any evidence that ONE SD is changing. TEN is only allowed one high def and two standard def channels which it has. Obviously by 2013 at the latest ONE SD ceases to be necessary. A change to ONE SD anytime soon sounds like wishful thinking.

  1. This could be a red herring. Seven could be purposefully misleading folks at Go! and One. But perhaps not.

It would seem that with all the US product they have in their vault like Family Guy, King of the Hill, Beauty & the Geek, Stargate, Still Standing etc it would have made more financial sense to go with a gen ent network Still with some lifestyle and factual)

What lifestyle shows do they have on the air other than BH&G right now? I guess they ahve a lot in their vault that they own, and they own most if not all of their factuals. They could run repeats of those on the new network.

If it goes this way, I like 7Life as a name. But I am still hoping for a broader gen ent network.

  2. Yawn.

As Paull said, a mix of lifestyle, general entertainment and some timeshifted material from the main channel would be a better idea.

Not that I care about any of these shows, but they have a lot of stuff left in the cupboard. Reaper, October Road, Knight Rider, My Own Worst Enemy, Kings, Ugly Betty, and The Unit to name a few.

I’m aware most of those shows were axed, but a channel littered with factuals and docos 24/7? I enjoy the odd documentary and the ones Seven have been playing in the Mon 7.30pm slot have been decent, but an entire channel? Come on. Why not time shift series like Boston Legal, Heroes and Lost to air at 8.30 on +7?

This won’t hold a candle to ABC2, or even GO if its purely factuals and Better Homes and Gardens/The Great Outdoors/Border Security reruns.

  3. OK, we have three very bad idea’s here in the mere 100 words or so of this blog – Plus7 and 7Plus both suck as channel names which we will have to live with and use for years to come [maybe, IPTV anyone]…

Also, as much as I like watching Better Homes and Jargons, enough is enough already for ‘Lifestyle’ shows – I already know how to put rocks in my garden, lay sand, paint a wall, cook a steak, lay payvers, plant a hydro-friendly garden, make a water-feature, walk a dog, convert my old off cuts into a dining table, make blinds out of tea towels, put in better gutters, demolish decks and pergolas, use paper-mache…

I would much prefer Se7en to compete head-2-head with GO! and have an entertainment network – that is, a network providing shows in a regular timeslot, in theme, in order, possibly on a delay [+2/12or whatever], with shows canned on the main channel showing up as if it were the real deal…

If we don’t have a GO! competitor then we, as FTA viewers are without cause…

    Don’t shy away Seven…

  4. mathew: “Thats exactly like their main channel”
PD: “How is this different from regular Channel 7?”
Jed: “Seven wants to play all the same shows it does at the moment.”

BH&G and the great outdoors… can someone please list these other endless lifestyle shows that you propose fill 7’s entire schedule.

  5. guess i’ll just stick to GO! then, i agree with others, 7 has plenty of lifestyle stuff on already, this has more risk of canabalising the audience then any of the other commercial digital channels.

  6. Who cares what it is as long as channel 7 launch something,
    lifestyle sounds ok
Anyway if these second sd channels are bound to develop and change as time will tell
at least we are finally hearing something,
3 months now that’s a bit long dont you think
Pull your finger out seven you have had since january this year to get this happening,
now that is truly pathetic to take this long and the information is from the financial review not from seven itself
    pathetic seven pathetic
    Make the announcement already

  7. A typical line-up would probably be:
    4.30 Better Homes and Gardens
    5.30 Great Oudoors
    6.30 Auction Squad
    7.30 Amazing Race
    8.30 Surf Patrol
    9.00 Triple Zero Heros
    9.30 Worlds Strictest Parents

  8. This is what i have tipped for ages. lifestyle is one of the most watched channels every week on foxtel, the stuff is cheap as, there is hundred of thousands of hours of it out there, it is the easiest to find advertisers for, and skews right towards the GB demo which in the last few months has been in huge demand.

i would barely watch it, it’s not my cup of tea, but if 7 waned a big profit and the most viewers possible, lifestyle is the clear way to go.

  9. They have deals with 20th C Fox, NBC-Universal, NBC, RHI-Hallmark, Disney, Granada, and…and…so there’s no shortage of content. Grab a few hours off Al Jazeera like the NZ and other Pacific stations do. Not just the world’s best news but great documentaries. And it’s free, gratis, for nix. Such an opportunity to make something really different. An opportunity wasted.

  10. With 7, 9 10.. etc allowed to broadcast an extra channel. Is there any regulation on what they can or cant broadcast ? 10 has the sports channel. 9 has the youth/adult GO channel. Basically they can broadcast whatever they like.

Are 10 and 9 allowed to broadcast those phone sex or beauty infomercials on GO and ONE at night ?

Has the government said what they can or cant broadcast on those extra new channels. For examples showing new movies. I would love to see more new movies. Is it me or is 7, 9 and 10 showing more repeat movies instead of more new movies.

  11. Hopefully, lifestyle is just a small part of what they are offering, perhaps it would be Lifestyle Fridays with all these shows from 7:30pm onwards and then repeated Saturday mornings after 9am. Othwerwise they will be using the content already seen by Foxtel/Austar customers.
We really need another general entertainment channel like we already have in the current FTA channels, however they should be taking notes from this site’s survey on how to manage the network. There are a number of shows that Seven have purchased and not shown in full or aired at all, similar to Nine, sending their shows to GO! was great, Seven needs to do this. We don’t want all the shows onsold to Foxtel (Which Nine and TEN have done). At least Nine brought some back for GO!, but too little too late for most people. Ten didnt want to try and make them work on the main channel. The only thing I dont like with GO! is the double/triple episodes of shows. I think this may stop once they get more content after October.
I dont think a dedicated movie channel could work for FTA.

  12. My humorous idea…
From the people, who thought “bored rigid” was a great idea for a legitimate attack on the Subscription TV sector, Seven proudly gives you…
The Advertorial Channel! All the advertorials that Seven passes off as lifestyle programs, replayed 24hrs a day. See 100 airings of Coxy a week, primetime reruns of Guide to The Good Life, Sydney Weekender and the imitator, Queensland Weekender. On weekday mornings, see the previous day’s Morning Show, as well as Sunrise’s ads disguised as news.

This channel will literally pay for itself! Think of it, 24/7 advertorials…
    (end humor)

  13. good – better homes and gardens 24/7. i can ignore this channel and hopefully they’ll get with the program and show the football live on your the main feed.

  14. If its anything like Lifestyle or Lifestyle Food on Foxtel then it will be really good and entertaining.
However I like some of the ideas for old Aussie movies and series.
Also like the idea from J Bar on the name 7Life.
Finally, I wish Network 7 would just dam well get on with it !!

  15. Damn people, surely general entertainment is already well covered now with Go, and with all of the existing original channels? I think it’s great to see another genre being given a specific channel. After all, it’s what we all wanted with Freeview – more specific channels like Foxtel.

    @daqua_99:
Don’t you see? Once analog is gone, 7 will have the option to move lifestyle shows to their 2nd channel, leaving room on the main channel for more shows from Disney, NBCU, etc. TV in Australia is going through a transitional phase – the process isn’t complete yet.

  16. No surprises here. Whilst it may not be too popular here this’ll proabably do pretty well for Seven. I’ve noticed they’ve been putting on first run Kiwi lifestyle/factuals (Renters, Ski Season, etc.) on around midnight or later for the last couple of months so I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw these on the channel.

  17. If this is real, then I gotta say I’m dissapointed. But I’m sure though they are just leaking bits of information at a time before it launches. Surely though they will slot some different content in though, apart form the regular lifestyle stuff.

Is it a safe bet that 7HD will return to full 24/7 simulcast of the main 7 channel when this channel launches?

I reckon we won’t see it before new years day I reckon. lol 🙂 Maybe they’ll launch it on Christmas day, who knows. lol
