Nine pumps up the Jam

Nine's new infotainment show pulled an impressive 1.32m viewers, already surpassing anything it had on air last week

jamTiming is everything in television and it seems there’s nothing like Money for Jam in times of economic crisis.

Nine’s new infotainment show pulled an impressive 1.32m viewers last night, not just winning its timeslot, but already surpassing anything it had on air last week. That has to be good news for a network struggling to get its new shows to fire.

Together with Two and a Half Men and RPA, Nine managed to clinch the night by a slim 0.1% from Seven (of course GO! is in there too).

The news was bad for TEN with a repeat Simpsons at 8pm its top show for the night on 790,000. The 7pm Project was outside the top #30 shows for the night on a dreadful 602,000 -that’s 88,000 viewers behind Neighbours. Tonight the show reveals the Celebrity MasterChef cast in a one hour edition.

TEN finished the night behind the ABC.

For Seven, Seven News (1.55m) again blitzed Nine News (1.1m).

Over on ABC2 Junkyard Wars took 165,000 while Fringe had 84,000 viewers on GO!

  1. For someone without a ratings box (and no one I know has one, I know a lot of ppl, which clearly influences me that the ratings system in aust is total crap), the ratings got it right for once.

Though the show did mainly consist of start your own business from home with something you’re passionate about. Or attend a research focus group, of course that assumes you live in a capital city.

  2. Oh it’s your promo.. shame I was looking forward to seeing the rest of Singing Bee. Didn’t that get better ratings then shows like Aus perfect couple and dance your fat ass off?

  3. So you’re saying money for jam was though of back when the singing bee started? I think this could be the new timeslot for the rest of the series they haven’t shown yet considering it’s coming up to the end of the year and only weeks away from school holidays.. I mean how many 20/1 episodes can there be left? Did it do well in that timeslot before?

  4. @ Andrew B. Regards music royalties, the broadcasters have a blanket license to use just about any commercial music for in-house productions. They report usage and the APRA takes a percentage of their income which they distribute to the artists and writers used. That’s why shows like Domestic Blitz and Money For Jam flood their episodes with popular music.

  5. Good work to Channel 9 for finally bringing out a hit, shame it was an otherwise fairly useless program. What they really need to do now is pop a half hour lifestyle program on at 7:30 so that Money For Jam doesn’t sit so awkwardly after Two & A Half Men.

Don Burke seems to be hanging around other Channel 9 shows a lot lately could a thirty minute Burke’s Backyard be just around the corner and perfect as a lead in for Money For Jam?

  6. Money for Jam, yikes. I didn’t think Australia had that many nannas otherwise who else would watch this tripe apart from the generation that refuse to believe that the other networks might have something different to offer. They were brainwashed years ago by Brian telling them, lol…….

  7. @tvtragic i too was a Money fan from the ’90’s so i enjoyed Money for Jam.Re:the 7PM Project Lucky its onTen otherwise, if it was shown on nine it would be gone by now,Also Carrie should have stuck with Rove,i feel it would have been more secure for her.

  8. I wonder how much they are paying in royalties for all the songs that were played during Money for Jam. Seems severytime they’d mention something there’d be a somg related to it in the background. At least 20 for the whole show it seemed.

Most of these ideas / stories have been covered on TT and ACA and others are common sense anyway. Like TT and ACA, it will find an audience, but last nights’ figure was more curiosity as opposed to what it will regularly get in ratings.

  9. Makes me wonder why Carrie Bickmore would leave her relatively secure Nova news reading job for something that is unlikely to survive much longer. Is she nuts!!

I for one loved the Money program of old. Having Shane (overexposed Crawford) and Shelly Craft onboard made it a bit cringeworthy for me. They do have some good tips though

  10. I’m sorry, but this is embarassing for Australia. I thought these “infotainment” shows died in the 90s and we had evolved a little. I thought Australian TV and Australian audiences had grown a little more sophisticated. Obviously not.
If these ratings keep up, get ready for of this stuff on Nine. Of course, most people should be happy. Seems to be what Australia wants

  11. @ franz – I think 10 is sticking with 7PM for the rest of the year (as has been mentioned quite a few times).

And sorry for being pedantic but ch10 does not own the Seinfeld episodes anymore for crying out loud!! Ch 9 has them. They are currently screening on Go! daily.

  12. Just Out of Interest How is the 7pm Project Doing? Will It last the year out or Like Hinch or Alan Jones Live Die a Fateful death and go back to the bad old days of Seinfeld.

  13. I saw a few minutes of it – and then 2-3 of the presenters went banging on about such a great deal/financial package NAB were doing.

I felt sick, knowing I had wasted 3 mins of my life – and i felt sorry for the presenters having to say all that rubbish purely because the show is what must be a glorified advertorial piece. I tuned over to Go! and actually enjoyed my time there watching sarah connor and fringe (hooked after just one episode)

  14. Fair enough about the Singing Bee. Thanks for clearing that up David.

Either way when Nine decides to return it, that Thursday night timeslot would still be perfect.

  15. Cameron, Singing Bee honey is not as fresh as the Jam (see how empty it is)! Nine used them for promos last time, so the timeslot is old. I thought the pic would be cute for the story given the pantry theme! Up there with the Media Watch coffee mug where the faces glow when hot water is added!

  16. Money For Jam was much better than Perfect Couple and deserved good figures. Very helpful hints on how to save money.

The honey in the picture says The Singing Bee premieres on a Thursday at 8:30pm, now that will be a great timeslot and so that would mean 20 to 1 will finish soon. Did well last year in the same timeslot so Nine should continue to win Thursdays, a day that they keep consistent with little change (maybe they should try it every other day with strong programming then they could say that they are still the one).
