Screw you guys, South Park out until 2010.

South Park, which will be pulled from SBS programming after Monday night, will not return until 2010.

cartman-3TV Tonight can confirm that South Park, which will be pulled from SBS programming after Monday night, will not return until 2010.

SBS is replacing the show with Man v Wild.

The long-running animated series only returned to air on September 14 and still had 3 more episodes planned to air.

The backflip is a surprising move by SBS, given it isn’t usually prone to reactive programming.

An earlier season of the show will also air on GO! on Sunday nights in October.

  1. Man vs Wild is actually a damn compelling show, so much so that it even had an episode guest starring Will Farrell, after he asked to be allowed to take part. It does seem more inline with the image SBS is trying to project, where instead of just being the channel known for smut, they’re looking for some more in-depth shows (no offence to South Park).

@Bre Saxs: Beavis and Butthead is a good show, but who knows whether GO would be actively trying to get it. If anything, then maybe they’d try to get rerun rights to some of the more ‘pop’ fare that’s inline with The Hills, like My Super Sweet Sixteen, or Jackass (I think Ten has/had the rights to the latter). Same with Daria, which I know ABC used to air ages ago, but I’m guessing the rights would have lapsed by now.

  2. If GO! has the rights for programs from MTV, does that mean Beavis & Butt-head and Daria might be shown on there?

If GO! is standard or digital only then thats why I can pick up GO!, ABC2 and One on my set top box but not Seven HD.

  3. Not Sure about the poor ratings but How does SBS try to compete against Nine and Tens Non Cartoon Offerings with South Park.Surely anything has got to be better than some documentary. Why Not a Cooking Show or something else that appeals for Mondays.I since have switched to Ten in the same timeslot with no regrets for Good News Week.

  4. This move just doesn’t make any sense. The 8:30 – 9:30 Monday night slot on SBS has historically been reserved for comedy programs. Why would SBS screw with this tried and tested formula, first by screening a mountaineering documentary at 8:30, and then by replacing the entire hour with this “Man V Wild” show?

At least the commercial networks only change their schedules in response to poor ratings. They don’t just go and completely overhaul one of their highest rating timeslots for no reason. This move is akin to Channel Ten canning NCIS and replacing it with Futurama repeats. Wrong timeslot, wrong audience – just stupid.

  5. SBS’s fault I believe, Piracy maybe, but honestly by they time they finally air the show, the dvds are available from the US. Why watch the edited for tv versions when the unrated dvds are legally available?

  6. @ Edu: we are up to Season 13. Remember in the US, Season 13 was split into two blocks of 7 episodes. SBS has only shown the first four episodes of the season. I guess it is waiting for the other 7 episodes (to air in the US in October and November), so it can show the rest of the series in one sequence in 2010? Still, it’s an disappointing move by SBS.
@ Bre Saxs: Comedy Central, which shows South Park in the US, is owned by MTV Networks (a part of Viacom). Channel Nine has an output deal with MTV Networks, which allows Nine to air new shows from MTV channels (such as The Hills) and repeats (such as South Park).

  7. Have SBS got the” commercial shakes” now? Every time a program’s ratings dip momentarily or another network puts something good on in the same timeslot you change out your programming (no matter how far into a season you are) like a frightened rabbit. Never risk having to actually face any competition. What do you think this is a competitive market or something?

And they wonder why internet downloads of shows is so popular!

  8. This is surprising, as I thought South Park was one of SBS’s most popular shows. For some reason Fatbeard was not scheduled to air with the other episodes.

How could South Park be shown on Channel 9’s High Definition / Digital channel GO! if SBS have the rights to the program? Are you sure David you don’t mean SBS2?

  9. Did SBS hire a bunch of ex-channel 9 staff or something? Treating the customer with disdain goes against their style, historically. I hope this isn’t a general trend, otherwise we can kiss goodbye to so much unique Australian programming as well, since I’ll wager shows like Pizza don’t figure highly in the minds of the new order either.
