You voted Australia. But how?

So just who did vote for The Spearman Experiment? And when were we asked? Here's TEN's answer.

SpearmanYou voted Australia.

They kept telling us on the ads, and in the show, that we voted in the countdown of The Spearman Experiment.

But viewers are confused. In online forums, including on TEN’s own site, readers are all asking who voted, and when were we asked to vote for its top 15 list of Aussie Comedy Characters?

According to TEN’s website, “For the first time ever, Australia will countdown via online poll ranking the most celebrated top of mind moments in history.” First time ever? Big claim.

TV Tonight put the question to TEN.

A spokesperson said, “In April and May this year the producers (Southern Star Entertainment) commissioned independent TV audience research organisation Audience Development Australia (ADA) to conduct an online poll on our show-topics.

“Using a random sample, covering all metro markets and consisting of adults 16+, they asked that Australia rank 15 items for each show in the form of a series of lists, covering a variety of topics ranging from the sublime, Aussie Comedy Characters, to the ridiculous, Cashed Up Bogans.

“All polling had to be done in advance to allow time for clearance and compilation.”

TEN didn’t respond to a question about how many people participated in the polling.

Many readers have commented on the show’s glaring similarity to 20 to 1.

All eyes on how it performs next week now the curiosity factor is out of the way.

  1. I, am probably on of the many Australians who ask the question “how did we vote, if there isn’t a site for doing the poll?” which brings me to my next subject, there is “next to nothing” of truth in this show, it’s all scripted to be the specific people, which takes the whole point out of the show (and they are curious as to why they lost over 300,000 viewer’s) I reckon they should actually do a real poll where “We” the Aussie people get to actually have a say. I, am afraid to say but number one biggest screw around on TV for 2009 was the “so called” Spearman poll.

  2. At the start of the show, When Magda advised that Australia has voted, There is a map of Australia with the different states and territories flashing at different times. Just a little note , Canberra is a territory, It is part of Australia, but it just happens to be part of NSW as per the Spearman Experiment

  3. I though 20 to 1 sucked – 20 Votes;

My vote is this show is total crap… I thought after a year of 20 to 1 TV execs would have seen that there was nothing to be gained by replicating it! – even with another real star at the helm, look what you are doing to Magda…!

The only reason these shows are watched is because there is sfa else on…

I love Magda Szubanski but this show is scripted crap going on about being Aussies and what it means to be Aussie… Makes me cringe….

It has to be scripted it is so corny! if it is actually not scripted it should be by some writer after the “Oi Oi Oi gland” has been removed, – guest presenters crapping on about Stuart Diver! AHhhhhhhh!

I’d like to say; “Magda, its not to late to get of the show or demand they change the writers!” surely you can see how bad it is, can they really be paying you enough?

And to the Writers; the writers on Home and away & Neighbors would do a better job after a lobotomy! commit hurri kurri now! you are hurting us!

  4. Lame, Lame Lame. Who cares about these people.
We have enough of talk shows and chewing over things that have happened and reality shows and game shows.
Get real and bring some entertainment to Television. Not the same lame as everyone else.

  5. i didnt actually know what this show was about when i saw all the ads. but it had magda as the host so i figured it would be a good show, knowing what she’s like. i didnt have any idea until i saw the discription on an online tv guide. whn i read it and saw it was on at the same time as 20 – 1 i was completely confused. why would anyone decicide to put them on at the same time. its stupidity. then i realised there is so much hype about this supposd new original show that australia voted for that they did this time slot o it would take 20-1’s viewers. but after watching 20 minutes. yes i survived a hole 20 minutes, i realised that this is never going to work. they are so close to being the same. they give a little bit of different information when talking about each show and their opics are very different. the new one is very much based on trashy stupid stuff that no one really cares about, but saying that, who cacres about 20-1’s either.

to sum all this bubbling on up. it is a stupid show, and i say no one watches it so it can be canned and we get a good show on that we want to watch!

  6. It was a point;ess show. & not a very good pointless show.
It had “filler” written all over it… Ch10 can’t think that this is
    a viable programme… seriously…? 🙂

  7. Getting on in years myself, I don’t mind a bit of nostalgic. The problem with these shows is they stick in too much irrelevant padding. Trite comments by D grade celebrities – more irritating than informative or amusing. The hosting issue is tricky. Do we even need one? Would a voice over suffice? The host seems to be little more than use of a celebrity endorsement factor – use of celebrity pulling power to encourage people to have a look. Whereas Bert has personality, unfortunately, Magda (as her self) seems to be devoid of one.

Magda is a good comic actor, but does she need to adopt a persona for her talent to shine? Stripped of one, she comes across as dull. To be honest, it feels as though she is sucking the life from me. I remember seeing an interview with Jack Lemmon. As a terrific comic actor, people expected him to be the same off camera, and he confessed that he wasn’t….he was just Joe Average. His comedic element was confined to the role and lines written for him. This talent was injecting life into those characters.

Ed Kavalee hams it’s up to the nth degree on TV Burp, but it’s entertaining to watch. If Magda were to create a new persona, then she could a similar thing. In light of the factor that the first show was celebrating comic creations, perhaps the secret to turning it around was starring them in the face? Just thinking about TV Burp. It is also just a clip show but, for me, that format works. Could it be adapted to work with these old nostagia clips? Love to see Ed have a go at it:)

  8. I’d set the Ice Guide to record this as a series record. I hit “play” on the first episode later that night, realised what it was trying to be, deleted the recording and immediately cancelled the series recording.

Unspeakably awful, shoddy programming from Ten this time. Bring back Micallef.
