Beauty and the Fake?

Did 28yo chemistry student Corin Storkey, and father of a daughter, fool producers into thinking he was a Geek?

corinWhat’s the definition of Geek? It’s a questioned that’s been raised by some media following the suggestion that a contestant on Beauty and The Geek may have put in on for the cameras.

The show carries a $100,000 prize at the end -not a bad reason for bluffing your way throught if you were so inclined.

Last week Ninemsn suggested that Corin Storkey, a 28-year-old chemistry PhD student from Melbourne, had fooled the show’s producers into thinking he was geekier than he actually was.

“I think Corin may have been pulling the wool over our eyes,” host Bernard Curry told ninemsn.

“He is a little more coordinated and savvy with the ladies than he liked to let on.”

But it also seemed like a nice angle to generate a little publicity.

Yesterday Seven confirmed to Reality TV fansite Reality Ravings that Storkey had fathered a child -which kinda casts doubt on his supposed lack of social skills.

“Their virginity or lack of wasn’t an issue when casting the geeks,” a network spokesman said about casting Storkey.

“We were more concerned if they had a love of history rather than their dating history.”

The issue raises some questions about whether contestants managed to fool casting directors and producers on the show.

One source tells TV Tonight: “All the geeks have been styled to look like your stereotypical “geek” for the program, that there is no doubt. But, the point is though, is that they are all academics and geeks. A lot of time was spent researching to find potential applicants to ensure they are the real deal, which all of them most definitely are.”

On the show’s official website Storkey says, “I find women very complex. For guys it’s simple: food, sleep and computer games and we’re happy.

“I really struggle to approach women and when I get the courage to do so I never know what to say. I get so nervous I find I stutter, sweat profusely and end up looking like an idiot.

But hey. It’s Reality. There’s a whole lot more that’s fake in the genre than this issue.

  1. I’d probably be compelled to watch it if they had a geeky beauty snuck in as one of those “We-Have-An-Advantage-But-If-Someone-Finds-Out-It’s-Instant-Death” type things.

It would make things interesting, but she wouldn’t last if she has a Triforce or Konami Code tattoo, or something.

  2. Hot ladies and geeky looking guys— This show clearly nails the essence of the program. Whether or not they are paid actors/actresses this show is so easy to watch and in a level, engages you with their innocence of both the intellectual and relational realms of human society.

I disagree with the producers getting fooled by the supposedly ‘geeks’. These producers are smart enough to know who they’re hiring and what these ‘talents’ are capable of. Seven may have been asked to chase young viewers as their channel is seen as an old channel. Nine has the advertiser focused viewers and now the youth-focused GO!. This is a tactic: It is more likely that they intentionally fooled those people who think they got fooled by these geeks.

These producers are smart people, not geeks…

  3. There is something about the Australian version compared to the US version that just seems so off but I can’t put my finger on it….maybe they are all paid actors…

  4. Just because he got another geek pregnant doesn’t mean he’s not a geek. Can you really imagine the ladies queueing around the block for him? Whichever glasses he is or isn’t wearing.

  5. I think the casting of geeks for the show was quite difficult (they seemed to be having problems finding guys). Which all makes sense really. If you’re a shy and socially awkward “geek” you won’t really be volunteering to be on TV in front of a million people.

  6. I have noticed that Beauty And The Geek seems to be promoting Corin a hell of a lot more than all the other geeks and beauties. He wins every other challenge, and he virtually dominated the promos and “sneak peeks” to the point that we had practically already met him before the show even started.

  7. Anyone who watches the show can see that he’s putting it on, overdoing it, and making fake snorting sounds. Puh-lease. He may be smart, but he’s no geek.

  8. Interesting that the glasses in this publicity photo aren’t the same as the glasses he wears on the show (wayfarers). I guess the wardrobe department was still getting his character together when this photo was shot.

  9. I have met him at a chemsitry conference. Didn’t seem like a geek. Haven’t really watched it enough to see how geeky he is on it but he wasn’t socialy awkward when I met him.

  10. This is guy is quite obviously putting it on. Where as the others are pretty genuine, this guy dresses in a stereotypical American geek way. In the very first challenge he could quite clearly rap and dance well, but still tried to play up to the nerdy stereotype. If this guy wins it, it will be a joke.
