Bruce McAvaney back for the Cup

Brucemca1Bruce McAvaney will return to front Channel Seven’s telecast of the Melbourne Cup next month.

The legendary sportscaller was forced to step aside from the Brownlow Medal last month following the death of his father.

The 2009 Melbourne Cup will be his seventh hosting, and no doubt brimming with his trademark enthusiasm.

“The Melbourne Cup Carnival is simply heaven for racing fans,” he said. “The racing, in conjunction with all the fashion and fanfare, genuinely makes it one of the world’s great festivals. It keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. It’s so much more than just one race that stops a nation. Each day has a distinct flavour that continues to build into the amazing spectacle at Flemington.”

Joining him are Simon Marshall, Richard Freedman and international rider Francesca Cumani, daughter of English trainer Luca Cumani.

Also on the Seven team covering the colour of the carnival are Peter Donegan, Greg Miles, Pat Welsh, John Letts, Johanna Griggs, Matthew White, Sonia Kruger, Fifi Box, Rebecca Twigley, Sara Groen, Hamish McLachlan, Neil Kearney, Michael Felgate and Sandy Roberts.

Seven has more than 300 personnel and some 50 plus cameras for its Spring Racing Carnival; in the helicopters, in the tracking vehicles, in the ground, in the jockeys’ room, in the mounting yard, in the stewards’ enquiry room, in the betting ring, in the parade ring, in the barriers and more.

I hope 7 do not have exclusive coverage this year at the expense of dedicated foxtel racing channel TVN… it was ridiculous last year watching the mounting yard previews then being forced to watch the race on 7, then switch back to TVN for post-race analysis! Leave the racing to TVN and the fashion to 7 please.

  2. the way have covered the melbourner cup the last few years has been dreadful at best. the coverage is all about flogging off their own shows and bringing in people like carson and sonia kruger to talk about fashion. they barely talk about the horse racing. it’s terrible and that’s what you should expect from 7

  3. If memory serves, Francesca Cumani is quite a fine filly herself 😀 – good addition Seven, if you’re gonna have horses on all day at least have someone worth looking at…

  4. Should be great to have Bruce back. It is tough losing a loved one such as a father.

    I noticed two mistakes:
    – “and no doubt brimming with hsi” his is mis-spelt.
    – “Telecast Times
    AAMI Victoria Derby Day
    Saturday October 31
10.30pm – 5pm Live in Adelaide” time should be 10.30am-5pm
