7Are these the nails that John Safran had driven into his hands during a staged crucifixion for his ABC series John Safran’s Race Relations?

Safran took part in a ceremony in April this year in the Philippines.

Reports at the time said he could be heard moaning loudly as the nails were driven into his palms and as his cross was hoisted up, allowing him to hang for about five minutes.

ABC Director of Television Kim Dalton waas previously quoted as saying the series was “a thoughtful and challenging exploration of cultural differences and convictions — the kind of project that you expect from John Safran.”

This episode is the final of the 8 part series. The series, described as a look at cross-cultural, interracial and interfaith love, starts on the ABC on October 21st.

Meanwhile his second episode is also attracting press after being inspired by Black Like Me, a book from the 1950s by a man who disguised himself to see what it felt like being black. He undergoes a transformation with make-up by Hollywood’s Brian Sipe and Alexei O’Brien (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

  1. Years ago, SBS ran a two part documentary called “Changing Races” where 2 males and 2 females from the UK were made up to look like a different race and to experience racism first hand, work, live, and socialise as a different race (not to be confused with a pitiful USA FX network series). So what Saffran is doing is hardly new…

    lol@Porky Domesticus.

  2. Yes this isnt minstell men but an experiment.

Cannot wait! Its gona wype the floor with rivals/imitators.

    We missed you Safran!

And just like the final ep of VS God, its gona have a great finale. How else could he have topped it?

  3. Very different @mikeys as this is for the purposes of gauging people’s reactions to his race, rather than making a face from a 50s racist minstrel show.

  4. Big fan, can;t wait for this to start…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t John doing a black-face thing in the teaser ads to an American audience??? Will it get axed in light of recent events – I dare say so given the massive negative international press of late…
