Geoffrey Rush to narrate Lowdown

Geoffrey Rush, Kym Gyngell and Julia Zemiro join Adam Zwar's ABC comedy about a tabloid showbiz reporter.

Geoffrey-rGeoffrey Rush will narrate Adam Zwar’s new comedy series about tabloid journalism, Lowdown.

Filming begins in Melbourne this week on the eight-part comedy series, based on Zwar’s former career as a showbiz journo for a newspaper.

Kim Gyngell has also joined as the fictional Sunday Sun’s editor, while Julia Zemiro will play Hope, a sassy publicist.

Previously announced cast include Paul Denny as photographer Bob, Beth Buchanan as on-again-off-again girlfriend Rita and Dalian Evans as inept GP Dr James.

Zwar (Wilfred, Valentine’s Day, Rush) will play Alex, who interviews high profile celebrities for his column, some willingly, others not so. The ailing Sunday Sun relies on Alex to pull a scandalous story out of his hat every week (oh this will be fun).

“The concentration of fascinating individuals per square metre in a newspaper office is very high. We’re looking forward to bringing that world to life as well as the celebs the journos have to interview – the celebs who hate us and worse, the celebs who really like us and want us to drive them places,” says Zwar.

The series is co-written with Amanda Brotchie who also directs, produced by Nicole Minchin (KIN) and executive produced by Andrew Knight.

Lowdown will air next year on ABC TV while Zwar also has a new series of Wilfred coming to SBS.
