It’s the new Who logo

Check out the new Doctor Who logo, unveiled yesterday by the BBC.

The TARDIS forms the new Doctor Who logo, unveiled yesterday by the BBC.

When the new series begins in 2010 there’ll be a new Doctor, a new companion and this new logo. The police box is one of the few constants across the long-running series, transporting the Time Lord across time and space.

The current logo was introduced in was first seen in 2005 with the introduction of the Ninth Doctor and modified in the opening title sequence of the 2006 Christmas Special, “The Runaway Bride.” The classic ‘diamond logo’ featured from 1973-1980 with the Third and Fourth Doctors.

There are three new specials with David Tennant coming, beginning with “The Waters of Mars” expected in the UK around November.

  1. I was looking forward to seeing this …but it is Crap … total Crap!
As said, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
I could handle Matt Smith’s stupid outfit, and tolerate the retro TARDIS exterior but this new logo is just so wrong on so many levels … god help us when we see the new TARDIS interior!!!
I love what Steven Moffat writes but I am now convinced that the power has gone to his head … he has gone too far!!!
Stop him! Stop him now! Before he destroys the best show on TV!
    Jack!

  2. It’s Brilliant! Wasn’t sure what to think when I first saw it, but it has grown on me. The “DW” Tardis is genius and looks great- a lovely logomark for Doctor Who- something it’s never really had before. As for the full version, it’s much more old school with the stacked wording and the large WHO, which I think is a nice, but thoroughly modern, nod to the logos of old- especially the first ones.

I’m sure that we’ll usually only see one or the other at a time, and not often placed together like this.

Looking forward to the title sequence to see how it all goes together- hopeully no more awful ‘spinning’ onto screen of the logo!

  3. Not a huge fan of the stylised DW but the wording looks good, reminds me of the B&W era. Looking forward to smarter writing with Moffat at the helm and also what they are going to do with the console room. And fingers crosses the new actor handles the role half as well as Dave has! For those complaining about change remember the logo/titles generally undergo a change to usher in a new decade.

  4. Stylised DW making up the Tardis. No no no no.

It didn’t change between Nine and Ten, why should it between Ten and Eleven?

I just wonder if Russell T Davies has been a pillock and demanded that there be a change at the end of his tenure.

  5. The show has enjoyed (or not so enjoyed) a variety of logos across its 46 year history, usually but not always ushered in by the arrival of a new Doctor. It’s a new era, new production team, new head producer, new head writer, new Doctor, new companion. There’s bound to be a new logo, new theme tune, new opening titles, and I suspect a different vision to Russell T Davies’. From what I’ve heard the production team are referring to Matt Smith’s first season as Series 1 (that’ll be interesting when the DVD box set comes out), so more to be confused about for those sticklers who want this to be called Season 31.

  6. Steven Moffat seems to want to cling to retro. Looks like everything about the new series that he didn’t like is going to be changed.

The only thing that doesn’t hark back is having such a young actor playing the Doctor.

I’m really not sure how this is going to turn out. I’m (slightly) apprehensive.

  7. Oh no no no, no! That’s awful!

Steven Moffat, we can’t wait to see you work your magic on the show, but producers, that right there is a spectacular, ’70-s-stubbies-and-cricketer-moustache fail.

JJ Abrams does better titles on the Dell in his study (see “Alias” 🙂

  8. I can’t really picture a cartoony DW TARDIS hurtling towards me in the new opening titles! The words Doctor Who look great however and are reminiscent of the Hartnell and Troughton logos. I suspect just the words Doctor Who will appear on books, magazines, DVDs, etc, and the TARDIS DW is just a gimmick. Otherwise really too big a logo to be plastered over merchandise.
