Mal Walden, improvising with weather.

"They've lied to me," said newsreader Mal Walden on air. "We've lost our weather man."

mw2“Well it seems that we have a little problem…” said TEN’s Melbourne News co-host Mal Walden. “Actually they’ve lied to me, it’s a big problem. We’ve lost our weather man, due to the weather I think. So with what notes I have, which means I don’t have to make it up …well, not all of it anyway, we’ll proceed.”

mwWith a very creative interpretation of the weather, Mal launched into reading the (very long) weather report, complete with gestures, including wetting his finger to test for wind, and motioning the wind moving from the northwest with a wave of his hand.

As he proceeded, Mal let in a few of his famous editorial comments.

“Sydney, where most of the executives seem to be based these days, 25 degrees…..the satellite sequence shows a complete, complex low pressure system….another cold front will be crossing Victoria on Thursday, maintaining a cold south westerly air flow into the next day, which I think should be Friday,” he said.

“And now let’s have a look at the 24hr rainfall chart to give you an idea of where the showers are expected around the nation. See it?”

As he was forced to read more intricate details about wind warnings, he couldn’t help but ask “we nearly there?”

More was to follow with temperatures. But it was the home stretch.

mw4It wasn’t the first time he has been so entertaining with the weather report.

Just brilliant.

  3. Again Channel 10 delivering comic gold with Mal’s weather last night. The same man who gave a message on air to the news department a couple of years back when the news put on an interview with the woman who had an airplane encounter with Ralph Finnes and her news partner Helen interviewing Cameron Baud at the Grand Prix and Cameron elbowing a heckler behind him on air.

  12. That weather report was the most entertain thing on TV all day / night tonight, was great! Love TEN news for that reason, Mal pulled it off perfectly, more Mal weather reports pleas!

  16. And this is what I love about TENnews. They aren’t scared to take the p**s out of themselves. Mal and Helen are the most “real” presenters we have, along with Peter Hitchener.

    If Mal did this on Nine or Seven news, he would have gotten fired; but Ten are so good at being ‘real.’

  19. And I will add to that with the hope that the speculation he may be leaving at the end of the year… was only speculation!! He’s great and 10news would not be the same. Helen and Mal are a good pair.

  21. Ha ha I only caught the end but it was hilarious. Good to see genuine human responses and humour onscreen rather than horrible scripted, pre-planned “banter”. Go Mal!

  22. Love Mal..his real funny guy for a newsreader,like that he has real input and is real ,So many times in past he offers his thoughts after certain news stories after 40 plus year on our screens he is tv legend. Keep it up Mal we love u mate.
