Melbourne Storms to NRL win

Melbourne Storm has won its 2nd NRL Grand Final in two years, defeating Parramatta Eels 23 to 16 in TV's other big Grand Final.

nrlMelbourne Storm has won its 2nd NRL Grand Final in four years.

Parramatta came to ANZ Stadium riding a wave of momentum but the young Eels found themselves in foreign territory and against the southern team.

The Storm scored 23 to the Eels’ 16 sealed in the dying minutes of the game. Parramatta made a comeback in the last ten minutes, but it was not enough.

The last minute win mirrored the last minute win in the AFL Grand Final last week.

Melbourne viewers are already getting worked up by the Nine telecast after the network cut to Nine News before seeing the trophy presentation.

  1. Nine’s actual coverage of RL is top-notch but the way they treat viewers in non-core markets is despicable. Hopefully the NRL fixes this in the next round of rights negotiations.

  2. Ugh Steven, when it comes to sport in Australia it goes:

    Fox Sports > Ten/One > SBS >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Nine > Seven

Seven’s coverage of sport is terrible. Not showing any of the Aus Open in HD, not showing a single AFL game in HD until finals, delaying sport as much as they can to fit in ridiculous 5 minute long commercial breaks, the laughably bad coverage of the Olympics last year, etc. Maybe they do horse racing reasonably well, but that’s insignificant compared to the horrible effort they give to everything else.

  3. Really? Nine in Melbourne did not show the team presentation or lap of honour? How disgraceful is that???? Unbelievable decision, very heartless towards the viewers and frankly, inexcusable. Way to go, Nine, to get viewers even more annoyed with you than they already are.

  4. blah, blah, blah. People need to realize the NRL is a corporate game only, its owned by news corp for goodness sake. Its trash, no style or class.
Ofcourse your going to get a shoddy broadcast for a shoddy sport.

  5. I spend alot of time watching many sports broadcasts across many categories including AFL, Horse Racing, Motor Sport, Cricket, Olympic Games, Tennis, Golf and now NRL. There was once a time when 7 sport was laughable at live sports broadcasts and 9’s wide world of sport was the elite broadcasters. I saw two telecasts this week on nine the Horse Racing on Saturday and the NRL Grandfinal on Sunday Afternoon/Night…they were both awful broadcasts.

Firstly, the racing telecast was the most disgusting telecast of untalented hosts, reporters and ‘experts’ ever assembled in horse racing history. The telecast had so much ‘dead time’ where the hosts were sitting there not knowing what to say. Compared to Channel 7’s spring carnival telecast with the likes of Mcavaney and Freedman they have alot to learn. 2/10.

The NRL coverage was also pathetic. I must admit I mainly watch AFL and couldnt believe people call this a ‘tv sport’. If that is good as your game gets with TV like that, you have alot of problems with your game NRL people!

I never thought I would say it but Channel 7 is definitely the new ultimate home of sport in Australia.

  6. even so i don’t watch NRL, this is really bad of 9, they should of shown the whole show, whats so bad about pushing nine news back 30mins or like someone else said atleast show the trophy presentation.
@mac, good to see it was on in the US, thanks to espn – i bet espn showed it in HD unlike perth viewers who only got it in SD as far as i know via dtvforum website, speaking of sport i don’t like it when ONE HD cuts up nascar and you don’t get to see NASCAR countdown, but thats not so bad at least you can see the driver getting their trophy.

  7. @no common, nine news started in Melbourne at 7pm meaning that their coverage in melbourne was already extended, what difference would 30mins make, besides they probably would win the time slot anyway if they went on with the post match celebrations, @allan just cause you don’t care doesn’t mean we all have to agree with you.

  8. i read a comment on the hearldsun website that in the usa espn showed the post match celebrations. how poor is it that you actually see more coverage if you are in america than if you are in Melbourne. the post match is a very important part of any grand final as it allows the fans to celebrate and revel in the win of their team.

Umm, I would of thought a National Sport Grand Final would of taken precdence over the nightly news bullitin? In particular, one of the teams in the GF were from Victoria.
I am sorry, but nine should of pushed everything back by 1/2 an hour, or at very least, done all of the awards(presentation of the trophy to winning team, medalions to winning team players, speaches etc), and then gone to the news at 7:15 or 7:20pm.
They stuffed up, the melbourne media, in particularly, the talkback am radio stations here are going to have a field day later this morning.

  10. get over it all you, who cares about a bloody trophy being given out, just watch it in the sports highlights of the news! do you need 30 minutes or something to pat your eyes with tissues?

  11. So typical of Nine. I am currently holidaying in Melbourne but wanted to watch this and i was completely shocked they cut to the news and cut the presentation. Nine you are a disgrace.

  12. Wow can’t believe nine melb cut out the ceremony! And we here in nsw were left to watch our trophy being handed over to the heartland of afl.

Disappointed that parra didn’t win, but then again they did pretty good actually getting to the finals.

  13. i did notice in the tv guide that the Melbourne coverage finishes 30min earlier than the Sydney coverage and though how the trophy presentation will probably be cut as a result, guess i was right

  14. My personal favourite moment of the GF was how they crossed to Darol for a Hey Hey cross promo (cos he just happenes to be an Eels supporter). Anyways awful post game coverage in Melbourne, shame I would of like to see my team get there trophy live. Go Storm!!

  15. I don’t watch NRL but they should have started the news then cross to the presentation as it’s lead story!

First they drop the Hey Hey re-run and now this, talk back radio will be busy tomorrow.

  16. So glad i got to watch this Live in Adelaide. Great match, pity Storm won. But because it finished at 6.30 i missed Seven news and watched Nine News. My god, their reporters are terrible and Troy Gray is a crap sports presenter. I don’t think i’d watch Nine news ever again, even if i am deseprate.

  17. Nine’s going to extreme lengths to keep their screening of 2.5 Men, in Brisbane, risking that the schedule would more be out of whack than usual.

Why not show a shortened ep (1.25 Men) or find some darn filler instead.

  18. Can not believe (well yes I can) that Ch 9 didn’t show the presentation – especially when storm won! No wonder nrl doesnt rate in melbourne – they dont even cover the full GF – imagine if 7/10 did this to the afl in syd or bris!?

  19. @cleavy..it was but what would you expect from that lot. “Gus” is the most one eyed nsw commentator there is while Sterlo (who I respect btw) was an Eels player.

So happy to see the storm win denying that twat Hayne a premiership.

  20. Channel Nine Melbourne, knowing the Storm has won, still cut to the news even when Billy Slater won the Clive Churchill Medal for best on ground, and when captain Cameron Smith (pictured above) received the trophy. I was forced to listen to ABC Radio for the post-match presentation. Had Nine been allowed to show the NRL on GO! I am sure it would have shown the presentation too.
