Next week: another sketch about absolutely nothing

When Hungry Beast said it wouldn't be playing that netball sketch this week, some media gave the impression the broadcaster had buckled. Wrong.

NetballPromoThe Hungry Beast team are still deciding what they will use for this week’s “Coming Up Next Week” sketch for tomorrow night’s episode.

After all, the gag they used last week parodying netballers, caused a right old ruckus.

The uproar was so distracting to some media, including the Daily Telegraph and A Current Affair, that they neglected to acknowledge that there was actually no netball sketch due this week. The sum total of the fictional sketch was aired in its entirety.

In fact the “Coming Up Next Week” gag is a regular feature of the show in the same way as ‘Wine Time’ was a regular bookend to Kath & Kim.

So when the ABC acknowledged it wouldn’t be playing the sketch this week, some media gave the impression the broadcaster had buckled under the pressure. Umm, no.

In its bid to stay as relevant and up to date as possible, TV Tonight hears the team are still debating the subject of this week’s closing sketch. Another silhouette confession would be great. Something about reactive media, perhaps?

Update:  ….keep your eyes peeled for Mahmoud Ahmedinijad’s Jewish mother.

  1. I think the media is buying into every trick this show pulls and its great! The tabloid ambience makes itself so with its reactionary moves to both a mock study and gender-flip parody of the media itself.

The second thing I want to say is the magic that is young people and ideas. Youth is something you cant buy and withit comes an energy to concepts. I am sure that as this show goes on it will be mixed but have some truly inspiured moments and ideas.

I think it is important to all members of the crew and cast to look at what the chaser did but top them interlectually because the Chase fell short there. They are young and well, hungry so theres nothing like a boxcar tramp fighting in the ring for a meal. They want to earn it. Not like the decadent Chaser who eventually just sailed on past success. The Chase had a couple of inspired moments late in the peice but so many dud yawns drowned them out. HB would have seen this and not want to repeat that.

I think a show like this can really struggle to get viewers and its dialogue with the media is important part of creating an audience.

  2. Well that again goes to show what a terrible and uncredible newspaper Daily Telegraph really is. They were stating it was pulled because of the “outrage” from the public and that is was the Daily Telegraph by questionign the ABC got it pulled. Lies lies lies. There was no outrage from the public, majority thought it was funny, and seems the ABC didn’t in fact pull it. I rate Daily Telegraph up there with British tabloid newspapers.
