Nine pulls Hey Hey repeat

UPDATED: A Nine spokesperson advises TV Tonight of its plans while there are suggestions host Daryl Somers was behind the cancelled repeat.

rfThis won’t go down well at all…

Channel Nine has issued a rare weekend programming amendment this afternoon to indicate Hey Hey the Reunion will not be repeated tonight.

That’s likely to incense a lot of the fans who were singing Nine’s praises this week.

Instead it will play the movie 50 First Dates at 9:30pm instead.

At this stage there is no explanation as to the reasoning behind this.

A lot of fans had planned on watching the show a second time, and there were plenty who heard about how successful the show was and wanted to catch it tonight. Some viewers even held off the Wednesday special to enjoy the show on Saturday night, its traditional home.

A move this late only reiterates why viewers have been so alienated by Nine programming and shun many of their new programmes. Many TV Tonight readers noted the Hey Hey reunion was the first time Nine had stayed on their box in a long time.

UPDATE: After breaking the news on Nine’s cancelled Hey Hey repeat, TV Tonight can now reveal Nine will replay both specials some time after the second reunion. A Nine spokesperson did not give any reason  for tonight’s replay being withdrawn.

Update: The Herald Sun says Daryl Somers asked Nine to remove the show from Saturday’s schedule.

  1. Its a simple problem to solve. Don’t let marketing type people make descisions about content. These type of people are idiots and have no idea on what constatutes quality. Get creative people into management and let them decide what is shown and when.

  2. Oh dear. I intended to record the rest of Hey Hey since I missed the last ten minutes (or I don’t even know how much) when I recorded it on Wednesday, but was unpleasantly surprised to find that I had recorded something else.
This is exactly why Nine is so unpopular. Hopefully we’ve all learnt our lesson that you can never trust Nine. And any notions that they may have pulled it to ensure strong ratings for next Wednesday, you’re probably right. After all, Nine is so thick nowadays that they probably think that will work. But if you ask me, pulling a repeat at the last minute will only lose viewers, on both Saturday and Wednesday. It’s beyond me how it could possibly increase the audience.
Nine may have reached a high, but don’t let that fool you that they’re not Still The One to mess it up.

  3. What a silly decision by the program director at nine. I would have thought that at least 1 million people would have watched it = good ratings and good advertising revenue, but instead we get some silly movie that has already been thrashed to death on TV. even at 10pm, the nine.com.au website was still saying HHIS reunion was on. they obviously have no idea themselves what they are doing.

I am one of those million, and I am really annoyed at nine and didnt watch the 9 movie on principle.

How about they give the second reunion to one of the other networks as they would seem less likely to stuff it up.

Oops – my bad … lack of sleep thanks to the cricket makes the brain a bit drrr

Either way, Channel 9 still sucks, especially in Adelaide, where they have no balls – so any program with a ballsy logo on it has an ugly green or blue block covering it (with the ball-less logo instead – like an opaque watermark) 🙁

  5. i was going to watch it but chance blown 9, i won’t bother tuning in for the other special either. i saw a few minutes here and there on wednesday and it looked quite slow and boring, but after people raved i was going to try it. i’m not that angry, gives me more time to watch movies on dvd instead, 9 is the only one loosing out here. if they can’t even keep it together for a show that rated as massively as this what hope is there for any thing else on the network.

  6. Lots of people here with anger management issues lol. As I said before it’s likely out of Nine’s control for whatever reason. No reason Nine would give up winning the night and week if they could help it.

  7. I’m willing to bet that Channel 9 will reneg on their promise to repeat the episodes of the Hey Hey It’s Saturday Reunion episodes and instead will probably release them for sale on DVD instead.

  8. That is a let-down. My Grandma didn’t see Hey Hey on Wednesday, so my mum and I were going to watch it again so we could enjoy it with her.

My guess is because of footage referencing it to being live eg Twitter, E-mails, live cross to John Farnham’s concert.

At least it hasn’t been replaced with 2.5 Men repeats.

  9. I Love Hey Hey and I love Channel Nine..Its been a Long wait, doesn’t seem like Ten Years..I am with a Majority of people who want it back,no question…It was a poor programming decision to take it off the Air in the first place..Here is how it is..”Wake up Channel 9″..You have let so many people down yet again..It seems that not only half the fortune has disapeared,Since the Legendary Late Kerry Packer, but so too has sensible decisions!, there is a total disregard and ignorance to the loyal 9 viewing public, suprseeded only by continual contempt..My advice..start listening to what people are saying and avoid a costly advertising revenue drop through retalitory boycott..Majority Rules!..

  10. I don’t think Adelaides poor-mans version of Channel 9 planned on showing the repeat anyway … they’re showing one of the Fantastic Four movies tonight – but have been advertising this for the last few days ?!

I’d dare say Seven or Foxtel stopped Nine showing the repeat due to Molly … they weren’t happy with him going on to begin with, so I doubt they’d let them repeat it, especially with the ratings they got from the first screening.

  11. Interesting … I’m watching Good News Week now (and the commercials therein) … it’s a repeat from Monday, started bang on time, and has me parked in front of the TV. Thank you Nine … if HHIS had been on, I might have watched your channel instead, but now I’m watching a channel with the courtesy and respect to play what they advertise, when they advertise it.

(Yes, it’s also out of character for Ten, but less so …)

  12. What a disappointment! I didnt even know it was on wednesday night, just expected hey hey to be on saturday like it always was and i dont get much of a chance to watch tv during the week anyway. This is a disgrace Channel 9 I’ve been looking forward to tonights episode all day.

I’ve always had alot of respect for channel 9 but this is a kick in the guts and lets face it anyway you treat your viewers like products that can be consumed and spat out whenever you want. I’ll be taking a stand against 9 for doing this, my respect has shifted. 😛

  13. Channel Nine are a joke. They tweak and tweak, until nobody wants to watch anything any more.

If they could just stick to their advertised programming, and give the viewers a chance to tune in – then maybe they could keep us away from YouTube and torrents.

No wonder TV is dying. Nine lose. Internets win.

  14. I think it may not be able to go on a Saturday because of advertising – doesn’t make enough revenue and the show being live would be expensive… not a wise move by channel 9 programmers but apparently (according to the recorded message) they will replay it after the 2nd reunion show has aired….

And it’s a Saturday night… as if anyone is going to be manning phones on a Saturday night – that’s what mobiles and private numbers are for!

  15. A poor decision by someone at Channel Nine who is not in touch with what the people want to watch. I missed the Hey, Hey reunion on Wednesday and were looking forward to it tonight. Not happy Jan! I could tell you where to put your 50 First Dates movie that replaced it but it wouldn’t be pleasant.

If you want ratings, you won’t get them making unpopular decisions like that. Drop your rubbish reality shows and get back to the good stuff. If you’ve got any brains you’ll seek to bring Hey Hey back for regular showtime!

Get some ideas from other channels if you want to know how to run a station, cause someone there certainly doesn’t know what they are doing.
