Now America is remaking Shameless

William H. Macy will head up the Gallagher family in the US adapatation of the UK drama, Shameless.

Showtime will produce an American version of Shameless, to star William H. Macy.

For the U.S. version, the Gallagher family will reside in working-class Chicago during the current recession.

Creator Paul Abbott penned the adaptation with US producer John Wells and both will serve as executive producers for the pilot to be shot in December.

The series, inspired by Abbott’s childhood growing up in a working-class family with eight children, has been a long term dream for Wells. At one stage Woody Harrelson was even rumored for the lead, and it was in development at HBO earlier this year.

  1. I am an american and I think they should leave Shameless alone! It is one of my faovrite shows and I don’t think a remake will do it justice.

  2. Like someone said earlier, it’s not like the people of America beg for remakes of shows from other countires. It’s producers decesion, and one of these said producers is the creator of the original Shameless, no one’s forcing him to remake the show, he’s been shopping it around networks since the first series.
    It’s not like the UK or Australia haven’t remade American shows, but the difference is the originals always fair better than the remakes there, where as in the US remakes hve been more successful. And I’ll admit that yes remaking Shameless is far from original, but right now in America everyother cable network is launching a series, so naturally there’s going to be a shortage of original content.
    And what does a remake do to “mess with perfection”? How does it take away from the original series in anyway? If you feel it will taint it that much, you don’t have to watch it you know. The last couple of series on Shameless have been far from perfect, when everyone started lip synching to Take That things went down hill fast. I mean there was a baby with telepathic powers, that would make sense if it was Frank hallucinating, but it was real.
    But the first three series were far from “Kenny’s family on South Park” great television is about drama and caring for people, and it’s alot easier to care for a family of kids with a mom whose vanished, and a dad whose views on child care is “Why worry about kids? You can always have more,” but then again I guess you’re right. How could that compare to CSI: Random City, and a bunch of rich teenagers in outfits that cost as much as most people’s first house.

  3. It’s laughable to see all the comments deriding “America” for lack of creativity–as if the decisions of a handful of producers represent a nationwide impulse to copy Britain and Australia. Shameless is one of dozens of new shows launched every year, a handful of which are remakes of shows in other countries. Very few of any of these new shows will be renewed, let alone artistic successes. But 90% of the great television shows produced in the last decade have been American. Otherwise, why all the illegal downloading?

  6. Absolutely Terrible Decision!!

    Proves once again, that the americans have no imagnation in regards to tv programming, and instead, pinch shows from other countries, namely, the UK and to a lesser extent, Australia.
    For all the Offices, there are also dreadful remakes like coupling and even a version of cold feet(which I don’t believe ever aired here, only the UK version did).

  8. Shameless??? They are remaking Shameless??? God this show is brilliant but they are going to ruin it again. God when will America come up with their Own stuff instead of stealing it from other countries. However in saying this it is Showtime producing it so it might turn out ok. Its not like its one of the bodgy american channels.

  9. Please no, this will be shockingly bad, why must the Americans take something good and ruin it?

    More to the point, why must ever country remake other shows from other countries, stop being lazy and make an original series.

When will they release all series of Shameless here in Oz?1 series only,still!!Utter contempt i say.I could watch Shameless over and over.And i don’t say that about many shows.I just hope Frank spends more time downing the drinks & popping the pills next series.He was sober too often in the last couple.Would be great to see Sheila back too.And the tourettes guy.S**k me off!

    There is no way on earth this will translate to the US. Why cant they just leave things alone and confine themselves to stuffing their own crap up.

  16. hmm William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher? Sorry I just can’t imagine it.

    Macy is a superb actor but I’m not sure even he can pull this one off.

    The UK version is great though, looking forward to the next series.

  18. Not again! Not another US remake! But Woody would’ve been better, William has talent pouring out of him but I can’t see him as the head of this missfit family
