7TWO ties with GO!

It will only be a matter of time before 7TWO has its first win over GO! And it could come as early as tomorrow.

7TWOIt will only be a matter of time before 7TWO has its first win over GO! And it could come as early as tomorrow.

Last night both tied on a 2.0% share.

ABC2’s Doctor Who repeat was the top show on digital channels last night at 125,000 with 7TWO’s movie Category 7: The End of the World next at 104,000 viewers.

Those channels would have had competition from SBS,  Monday is its strongest night. The network took a healthy 8.4% share last night with Top Gear pulling 726,000, beating Jamie’s American Road Trip and just 1,000 behind The 7:30 Report.

A new Two and a Half Men was the top show overall, on a very strong 1.45m. While many have asked ‘why does Melbourne love the show so much?’ the question should perhaps be ‘why doesn’t Sydney?’ -last night even more Brissy viewers watched than Sydney.

A Current Affair beat Today Tonight too. The latter played an exclusive Hollywood-produced DVD of Geoffrey Edelsten’s wedding invitation in which the flamboyant doctor re-enacted his romance with Brynne Gordon, narrated by Seinfeld‘s Jason Alexander. It even had an appearance from Fran Drescher. The excruciating, extended clip was car-crash telly with next to no reporting.

Elsewhere Hot Seat didn’t manage to beat Deal or No Deal despite giving away 250,000, while The 7PM Project, which had a good discussion with George Negus and Ben Elton, hit 741,000. The final Media Watch for 2009 was 704,000 (Jonathan Holmes said he was returning in 2010) and an enjoyable ep of The Apprentice Australia lifted to 874,000 -next week a double episode as two more are cut.

Monday:
7TWO / GO!: 2.0
ABC2: 1.5
ONE: 0.9
SBS2: 0.2

Update: The Vampire Diaries took 148,000 on GO! in its first screening, but with a second 1am screening, which took 7,000 viewers, its average figure dropped. This anomaly has long been an issue in ratings for the Pay TV sector too. Shows are averaged on multiple screenings within a 24hr period.

  1. so the figures for the repeated shows get averaged instead of added together, that’s a bit silly, the average is not important, how many people actually watched the show is what matters. hopefully this will be somewhat rectified when they start measuring timeshifting because since 7two I am heavily relying on the GO! repeats and I doubt I’m the only one. I think my 99 and 72 viewing is now equal to or more than my viewing of the traditional commercial channels.

  2. You are all Lucky to have 7TWO and be able to watch the shows you have been loyal to for years. Down here on the NSW South Coast we are in the TV wilderness and being treated like second-class citizens. We have GO! and ONE but we can’t even get an answer from our Seven affiliate (Prime) as to whether/when they may even be starting to screen 7TWO. In the meantime, we are missing out on new series of Ugly Betty, Heroes, Reaper – and more. If Prime don’t start screening 7TWO next year, we will miss the final season of LOST and 24. Prime – Bringing It Home…Sometime. So much for viewer loyalty in television these days…

  3. i agree @jed, this way people who are watching seven might see an ad for a show they like and then watch it on 7two, with go! unless you actually go out of your way to cheek you don’t know what’s on.

  4. GO! programming needs to improve. The block and back to back programming is a bit silly. Surely there are a thousand other shows they can put on instead of back to back Flinstones, Jetsons, Seinfield etc etc.

  5. i don’t think 7two can win tonight. survivor rated quite well last week. so i think both will have high shares. reaper was one of the top shows on 7two last week and betty wasn’t far behind. it’s a shame the unit has barely been advertised because i think 7two could have done 100k for the whole night.

wednesday is 7two’s real shance to beat GO! it’s a pretty good effort from 7two so far. i wasn’t expecting it to overtake GO! until next year.

  6. I’m really loving Go as I watch it more lately. Vampire Diaries is an excellent show, and I love Fringe as well (and sometimes catch Gossip Girl and Moonlight – sad there’s no Smallville though).

The only annoying thing is since Heroes is back I have to watch that on 7TWO whilst I catch the later screening of Fringe as the first play is on at the same time as Heroes. So I am glad that GO! does repeat the programs.

  7. @Alvin, disagree with you on that, i don’t think 7TWO really needs to separate with its own look, i think Seven has tied the new channel well. Don’t watch anything on Nine, watch some shows on GO! but i never see ads on GO! for Nine. Whereas on Seven and 7TWO there’s a little thing that comes up in corner ‘Now…Next” and tells you what’s on the other channel. I think that’s clever. And Seven also has ads for Ugly Betty and Heroes for their 7TWO channel.

  8. David could you please think about putting the Digital only multichannel ratings under the normal ratings on the home page every day?, if not is there anyway i can find them everyday

  9. IMO GO! is a much better station! Better graphics and visual representation 7TWO is just an ego extension of 7, they couldn’t even part with the name; what happened to diversity? I like that Go isn’t all that affiliated with Nine on screen. Plus they have a good daytime lineup as well as primetime.

7TWO’s strengths only come up in primetime; their Sunday and Monday schedule is atrocious! There isn’t a better word for it. Plus the daytime and weekend is just full of cr@p; they really need to invest in some older style sitcoms and general entertainment shows for daytime broadcast its full of cr@p

  10. Good to know about the Vampire Diaries anomaly. That is turning out to be a surprisingly enjoyable show. Better than FlashForward so far, although I haven’t watched either of last night’s episodes yet.

It is funny how people seem to like 7-2 better. I prefer the niche/cult programming on Go and ABC2.

  11. I found myself watching Sam Who? over Big Bang Theory last night, mainly because I only saw the BBT ep a few weeks ago and not seen the early eps of SW? in about 2 years. If the trend continues Nine has little hope of winning the ratings next year.

They need a fundamental change in attitude over at Nine and stop the constant change in programing, even GO! keeps changing, tune in expecing to see your show and it’s moved, they are also still having issues with programs starting early, especial the over night encore screening just when most want to record them they have to add up to 15 minutes to the start some nights.

  12. channel 10 needs that new entertainment channel quick! btw, 7TWO visuals looks the same as 7 but instead of red writings its orange. they should really improve it because GO and ONE’s visual define themselves as a separate channel.

  13. Not sure if it is a ratings numbers conspiracy, but when ever we change chanel to 7-2 either on the Topfield PVR or just on the TV, we always get 1-2 seconds of Chanel 7. This happens too when we record (not that we would do that 🙂 )

    Interesting…

  14. Well 7TWO is much the same as GO! in content although i think GO! seems to be more younger market most nights. 7TWO has better shows though in my opinion. Surely most people would have digital by now, i wonder if we’ll get to the stage where the new digital channels will start beating programs on their main channel.

And we know why Melbourne loves 2.5 Men so much, and Brissy getting higher numbers than Sydney is cos the Melbourne folks move to Brissy.

  15. 7TWO has also caught up in the demos, with a tie in the 18-49s and winning the 25-54s. Last week Ugly Betty did well, and this week see’s the return on the unit with reaper following at 9.30
Will be interestng to see how it pans out. Must be the cross promotion on 7 that gets viewers interested. The only way to know whats on GO! without coming to tvtonight is to watch it!

  16. thanks for the updates and ratings for the digital stations!
any chance this could be done everyday, if it isnt too much work!! (even if it is just the % i.e. no report like this one). cheers
