Idol: Nathan bids goodbye

17yo Nathan Brake is the latest contestant to be cut from Australian Idol.

nb17yo Nathan Brake is the latest contestant to be cut from Australian Idol tonight.

That leaves Stan Walker, Hayley Warner and James Johnston still in the race.

Brake, who had performed lavish ballads across the series, fought back the emotion as he thanked his family, friends, co-performers, fans and the Idol family.

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz stepped in as guest judge for tonight’s show which saw an excessive three songs from each singer.

Even more excessive was the number of times Andrew Gunsberg used the word “Australia” and “Australian” – 19 times tonight, including several back to back. That’s not including the number of times we heard it from contestants in video packages.

Goodnight, Australia…

  1. Greg Rust’s annoying crutch phrase is ‘as far as (insert word) is concerned’. His F1 hosting is peppered with it and towards the end of the season, Cam McConville was catching the same disease. Once you notice it, it annoys the hell out of you.

  2. So we complaing when the pad out the show with talking, now we complain when they pad it out with singing more songs…. interesting….

And Kuttyswood somehow I think the so called ‘Curse of the DST’ might be void this year, seeing as they don’t get voted out until the following week. Surely Queenslanders aren’t that slow….

  3. James so should of been out of Idol ages ago. It will show how pathetic Idol is this year if he gets to the final. Hayley is good but Stan is a standout. I loved Idol in its hey day but I wonder how many years it has left. The talent pool is waning.

  4. @ Kuttsywood – Given that voting is open until Midnight Friday night, I really can’t see how the hour – or even three hours in the case of WA – would make any difference.

Stan will most likely win. It’s between Hayley and James as to who goes home next week. Despite Hayley’s poor form last night, I would tip she survives and James goes home.

  5. @ Kuttyswood…I dont think there would be a huge issue with DST this year, peopel have until 11:59pm (AEDST) so 10.59pm in QLD the following Friday to vote, rather than just having 24 hours to vote. So, unless a rush of QLD’ers decide to wait untill 11pm Friday night to vote then it shouldnt matter so much this year. Stan Walker has got this in the bag though, the crown just Love him.

  6. Praise the Lord!!

I can’t believe he was in the competition for so long.

We need Haley to win – the other fools have no chance of succeeding in the music industry – they’ll end up like Casey Donovan, Damian Leith etc.

  7. Thank God! Best thing to happen all year on Idol is Nathan leaving. Hope to see Stan and Hayley in the final. Either of them deserve to win, but Stan has the better voice imo.

  8. Who cut the Brakes? I guess Ten viewers hated one of their own kind.

I’m tipping Stan’s gone next week, after all, the “Curse of DST” (my nickname for it) has struck down every Queensland Idol hopeful, since a controversial vote back in 2005, where a Queenslander was knocked out, by the smallest of margins, overwhelmingly attributed to the lack of DST in Queensland.

But if I, were a Idol viewer and as a Queenslander, It’s Time… to reverse the curse and give Stan, the man a chance, at what so many banana benders have missed out on, thanks to DST.

  9. Revealing last week that James would have been eliminated had Toby not left the way he did certainly got James some sympathy votes to get into the Top 2. James to leave next week, with Stan and Hayley to battle it out for the tarnished crown. Who wins I don’t care, because I won’t be buying either of their CDs (if they get to release one other than a Winner’s Journey…hello Natalie Gauci!).

  10. Well the night started off well with Nathan going .. after that not much good happened. I love Hayley Warner but she and the other bored me tonight. Hope she and Stan make it through as they are the most deserving, not a repeat of last year, AKA Luke Dickens..

Agreed that Andrew G is a great host, almost as great as Gretel!

  11. Surprisingly, I really miss James Mathieson from Idol, he brought kind of a playful edge to it, Andrew G is trying (and failing) to be Ryan Searest and dont even start me on talentless waste of space Ricky-Lee!

  12. Who cares about the number of times he said Australia or Australian?

    He’s not a bad host.

And even if he was intentionally being patriotic, what’s the harm in that?

    1. AG is a great host. It was funny cos it was a phrase that snuck across to The 7PM Project when he hosted that too. We’ve trimmed the number of times ‘journey’ is used but replaced it with another. All good fun.
