Could Matthew Johns really develop a show to compete head to head with The Footy Show?

mjoFurther reports on the future of Matthew Johns now suggest the (unnamed) production company he formed with John Singleton could develop a show to compete head to head with The Footy Show.

The unnamed company touts everything from a new-look NRL footy show to a Paul Hogan-style comedy variety to a movie with John ‘Strop’ Cornell. That should make it a pretty busy new company.

“If he can get a show to work then he might be able to make money, and not just get fees for being an on-air talent,” Nine CEO David Gyngell told the Daily Telegraph. “I’m happy for him.”

Seven is believed to be keen to bid for the next NRL rights and signing 2GB’s Ray Hadley, who could front a new show with Johns. So does that mean Matty Johns will wind up on Seven?

Gyngell said he would be surprised if Johns and Hadley developed a program and Nine was not given a chance to bid.

“I’ve got no concerns, footy shows are footy shows. We’ve got a good brand there,” he said.

Brand is the key word here. While the NRL Footy Show may have won a Logie this year, it is the AFL edition that delivers the numbers every week -and that’s just what Seven would be noticing: an opportunity to strike.

But forming an unnamed production company on paper is one thing.

Actually developing a product is another. On that score, it’s still very early days.

  1. There’s an independent radio show here in WA called “Not the Footy Show”. They can’t stream as yet but the content like their name is brill. They cover all sports except AFL and by all I mean all. From wheelchair sports to mainstream to interesting sporting stories like following the development of the world’s longest golf course (which runs from WA to SA). Now, if someone was looking to produce a new show I reckon they should get these guys to run this show to do it. If you can tune in on Wed – 990AM from 6pm onwards. Best sports show by far!

  2. I can’t believe that any media outlet would consider either of the “Johns boys” as appropriate content for anything. Their parents must be so proud. The fact that Singo thinks that M.Johns is the next Paul Hogan is probably the best joke that’ll come out of any of this.

  4. The Footy Show on Nine Sydney has been a disaster for the last few years. When Sterlo was shafted it went downhill that fast it was out of control. Sterlo knows more in his little finger then some of the people who sit on that panel each week. get rid of those dumb forwards and bring on some new faces from past who have played in the backs.
    The two football programs on Foxsports are so far in front of Nine’s show it isn’t funny. They talk about footy for the whole show.

  6. I am gob-smacked that Nine was offering to renew his contract. He is tarnished goods, forever reminding audiences what wrong with the brands they are promoting – deep seated misogyny. No network should go near him.

  9. Yes advertisers want to get into the demographic for Australia’s most popular sport in Australia’s biggest market rather than a code consistently outrated by 10 year old repeats of a Japanese cooking show.

  10. channel nine should admit the footy show in its current form is finished, and allow matty under the guise of his production company to make a new re branded rugby league based show. he would not be contracted to channel nine himself, but his production company would be to produce the show. eg: he could still appear on other networks or work with other networks,

  12. Yes, what we need is more footy shows. However, I don’t believe that this bloke has the talent to hold up a whole show, his one-trick act is going to get very old very fast. I refuse to believe that the bogan market is that lucrative.

  13. Would be a good move by 7 as people are crying out for a good Footy Show. Hadley’s weekend footy team blitz the radio ratings and would draw some of that crowd to watch. The Continuos Call team with Matt Johns would be a hit on TV.

  14. Good to see such high brow suppliers of television content posting their opinions again on here… did they run out of latte at your cafes this morning so you’re bored? You have a remote… use it!!

    How about some positive support for potentially more local product & more local jobs. I hope it goes great for him & any others who are brave enough to try new ventures in our industry.

  16. arent they replacing fatty next year and vossy. so he will have his unfunny characters on the show talking rubbish all the time. it wont compete with the real nrl footy show

  19. It shouldn’t be that hard, Cause the Footy Show has been crap for years!. Maybe Matty Johns could rassle up Ray Hadley & Blocker.. Those 3 would beat the Footy Show!

  20. NRL and AFL shows share logies (rather than win) but the NRL show is beyond description. Gary and Sam might (are) be losers but their show has some merit.

    Matty, spend time presenting a positive role model to your family and if you’re back on TV to the public. Warney might get on TV and promote stuff but everyone knows what he’s done in the past but he didn’t get involved with what you did so people are going to think about every time you appear. It’s simply the fact.

    Leave ch9 alone and do want you really want but don’t expect everyone to offier you welcome back.

I love Paul (Fattie) Vautin’s Footie Show, but when Mr Johns started his unfunny double entendre rubbish, his fascination with men’s bums, his alter-ego, forgotten its name, I left, when he left I went back, two chances me watching a show anchored by him, yep, Buckley’s and none, as an aside sport and sports panel shows is all nine is good for.
