Rumours surround 9AM with David & Kim

There is speculation 9AM may have been axed, but TEN says no decision has yet been made.

9am1There is speculation the axe has fallen on 9am with David and Kim.

The Australian reports that sources say the show has been axed despite no confirmation from Network TEN.

With just weeks to go before co-host David Reyne departs the show after four years, TEN has been facing big decisions.

A TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight, “David announced some time ago he was leaving, and we have always said that lends itself to more changes for 2010. What those changes are we have yet to decide.”

The network neglected to include the show amongst its returning titles for 2010. When pressed by TV Tonight last month, programming chief David Mott said a decision was pending on the competitive morning slot.

“It’s like having 3 casinos in 3 shopping centres all delivering the same thing. What you need is a real point of difference there,” he said. “You’ve got male / female, female, blah blah blah… all well and good. But when you’re delivering the same message in principal and the same reason why they belong then we need to create something new,” he says.

“Where we lose out in the mornings, we gain in the afternoon, and we do. Look at the numbers.

“There is a great opportunity to come up with something new and different in that timeslot and that’s what we’re about at the moment.”

Without a lead in to match Sunrise or Today, the show has struggled to compete with The Morning Show and Mornings with Kerri-Anne.

Yesterday it took just 35,000 viewers nationally against 182,000 for The Morning Show and 89,000 for Kerri-Anne.

In a recent poll by TV Tonight readers, 29% said they didn’t care one way or the other, 26% said they wanted a decent alternative and 21% wanted the show to stay with a new partner for co-host Kim Watkins.

While The Morning Show and Mornings with Kerri-Anne Kennerley both average seven advertorials a day, each worth $1 million a year in revenue, TEN has been down to just four a show.

Co-host Kim Watkins has recently been making appearances on The 7PM Project.

  1. @ john…. I don’t think you’ve watched the show before have you. David is hardly what I would consider left-wing.

and @ damo sorry… so TEN should axe idol and keep the show that rates 35k. hmmmm, I’m glad you’re not a programmer, or maybe you are at Ch9!

  2. @john

OMFG you are so right. The thing I like about The View is they all actually have an opinion and voice it. I love Elisabeth BTW.

The problem with Australian media is they are too scared to voice an opinion that is not left wing.

They should develop a chat show that deal with the issues of the day, similar to The View and have people with opinions and No Infommercials!

On second thoughts, maybe not, they stuffed that up too, The Catch-Up anyone??? (Shudders)

  3. Good riddance. It’s cringe-worthy.

Get rid of both of them Ten, and launch a new morning show based on “Live w/ Regis & Kelly” in the US.

Two comedians (or very funny people at the least) and a live studio audience.

Fun and entertainment with celeb interviews and makeovers and the like, rather than interviews with the President of the Skin Cancer Organisation and unknown authors.

  4. Why are people pushing for kim to stay? She lacks talent. She doesn’t know how to interview ppl. She can’t stop talking about her kids. She thinks she is the only woman in history to have had a kid. No please dump her 10 dump her along with david. he is a flop. You need to mix it up a bit. Don’t have two puppets for whatever the left winged agenda wants to push on us. Have a left winger and a right winger. I would love to see someone on tv who actually questions some of the Left winged agenda pushers instead of two idiots sitting there nodding in agrement no matter what their guest is saying

  5. About Time Ten Ditched that Dr Phil for a home grown chat show to follow Ten News and what better than the idea of Lunch with Kim between the hours of Midday and 1pm.
In Tens Favour are things like Totally Wild and Childrens Television between 7 and 9am on weekdays something totally foreign to the people who watch Sunrise and Today.

  6. Axe it. Not enough people are watching it, ;plus I’d love to see ‘ryan’ give ten a spray for cancelling a low-rating morning show which airs when he really should be in school.

  7. they axe a good show like this. but they think idol is a winner even though everyone with some common sense knows it’s dead. they fair dinkum have too get things straightened at 10. this show is better than what the supper flogs and the aging wonder put up every day

  8. This would’ve already got axed, if it wasn’t for the moronic advertorial crap it always has, that Ten earn money from. I’d suggest keeping it on, with Kim as host and getting rid of all the advertorial crap (if it’d mean cutting it down to 90 minutes, so be it). In the times Steve Quartermain has occasionally co-hosted with Kim, he’s always been good, if he’s at all interested.

  9. thats what i like about 9am! not having a million bloody infomercials, the same product day after day is so annoying, and the reason i rekon ten dont have as many is because they discuss their segments in alot more detail which takes longer which i love aswell, plus kim is hot as and so talented

  10. I hate to say this, but the only decent alternative may be a revivial of what Ten did best in the 80’s, quality local (by local I mean city-based) morning programs.

That is the point of difference, provide live and local content, and people will watch.

  11. It’s a shame if it gets the axe because despite not many people watching it’s actually a good show, I used to watch bit and pieces back when it started in 2006 but when The Morning Show started in 2007 whenever I am home I watch that not 9am. Here’s an idea Ten a chat show called how Lunch With Kim airing midday to 1pm following Ten News. This would give the show a good lead in, and a good alternative to Seven’s Movies, Ellen on Nine and News on ABC.

  12. 35,000 wouldn’t be a very accurate estimate considering than each oztam subscriber represents 4000 people, meaning that out of all the oztam subscribers in australia only 9 were watching David & kim.
