AFI Awards: East West 101 named top drama

SBS' East West 101 defeated Underbelly for Best Drama at the 2009 AFI Awards, but Nine's gangster series still went home with plenty to smile about.

ew1East West 101 has been named Best Television Drama series at the 2009 AFI Awards, one of three awards bestowed on the SBS drama series.

The Knapman / Wyld series also took out Best Direction for Peter Andrikidis and Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama for Susie Porter.

Underbelly also went home with three awards for Best Screenplay, Best Lead Actor for Roy Billing and Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a Television Drama awarded to Damian de Montemas.

The night was a triumph for director Peter Andrikidis, who directed on East West 101, Underbelly and False Witness -all of which won awards.

Last year East West 101 took out the Best Miniseries / Telemovie but this year it defeated the profile Underbelly series for top drama. Popular Seven series Packed to the Rafters went home empty-handed.

In the public vote for the AFI International Award for Best Actress, Toni Collette was recognised for her work in United States of Tara.

Samson & Delilah, which was part-funded by the ABC, took out 5 awards including Best Film.

    This show got almost zero ratings when recently screened!
    I think we shoulld read between the lines here:
    If it wins an AFI it means: boring
    Swift and Shift Couriers won nothing because it is too much fun for those AFI nerds!
