Spoiler: The third series of Big Love will air on SBS from January 12th just two days after the 4th season begins in the US.
But it’s a gay storyline within the polygamous Utah family that is already attracting attention. It will see a same-sex ‘close encounter’ for Alby (Matt Ross) the son of Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton) with another trustee. Alby has already hovered around numerous gay storylines in various episodes already.
“There’s a provocative nature to what we’re doing,” admits co-creator Mark Olsen. “It’s more than just the Mormon culture. We’re highlighting certain aspects of the church’s relationship with its gay members that I think, as the story unfolds, is going to cause no (small) amount of controversy.”
Last year the Mormon church supported a campaign to overthrow same-sex marriage laws in California. But the 13.5 million member church, officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has also distanced itself from Big Love, having banned polygamy since 1890.
The official LDS web site says sexual relations are governed by the Law of Chastity, which prohibits homosexual or lesbian relations and says physical intimacy should be “exercised only between a man and a woman who are legally married.”
And screenwriters….

Finally! SBS will screen season 3. They had it in ads near the start to the year (?) but it never surfaced. Brilliant series, and it gets better each episode. And the establishing shots of bits of SLC make me a bit homesick (yes I know it’s mostly filmed in Oregon).
Cool. I think Alby is an interesting character. During Season 2 I had hoped they would explore his homosexuality some more, so I’m glad to hear this news.
Personally I think the Spoiling is in the detail not the headline. Other sites didn’t even do that much, including Aussie ones.
Surely putting the Spoiler in the headline defeats the purpose?
Sorry – of course I mean the 12th!!
Thanks David, for letting us know that this show is back on on the 14th. Something to look forward to over the Summer break.
The writers obviously know more than the Mormon church about what humans do in real life.
I haven’t seen any of this series before but will now be watching.
