Stargate Universe renewed

New Stargate spin-off Stargate: Universe has won 20 more episodes from the SyFy Network in the US.

robert-carlyleNew Stargate spin-off Stargate: Universe has won a renewal from the SyFy Network in the US.

It has received a 20 episode order with a second series scheduled for the Fall season. A mid-season second half will first return in April.

The second half will become more serialised and build on the fractures within the show’s group of spaceship-trapped castaways.

While fans have been divided over the series, Executive producer Robert Cooper noted that the show was dealing with 15 seasons of fan expectations. “Hopefully, as the show goes on, people will appreciate Universe for being its own thing,” he said.

The show also plans to have more scenes set on the ship, instead of cutting back to drama on Earth, and will introduce a full-bodied alien.

“There is a big story point coming up that does introduce an alien race,” Cooper said. “It’s more along the line of a District 9-type alien. Our interaction is handled in a very Universe way; they’re not the typical Stargate alien bad guys.”

The show, which airs on SciFi in Australia, had its Free to Air premiere last night on TEN.

SyFy also renewed Sanctuary for a third season with 20 episodes.

  1. .This show is so pathetic ! I am so suprised this show survived, I watched all televised episodes to give it a chance to get better or go somewhere….it’s SO boring, dark…I’m amazed anyone would be stupid enough to waste good time and money on this flop of a series….

  2. I love Universe and I’ve hated the othe Stargates, so this is good news. But I am very annoyed with Ten for dropping Universe; it’s a good show and seemed to be getting good ratings.

  3. Being an avid Galactica fan and not having warmed to any of the other Stargate imaginings I have found myself mysteriously drawn to this program not sure if is our little mate Robert Carlyle or the suspiciously similar to Galactica corridors of the spaceship.

  4. I for one am very happy with this show so far, and good to see it on FTA last night. It’s a huge departure from the other versions, and that’s not a bad thing IMHO. I loved SG1, and really didn’t like Atlantis much at all. Is this the Deep Space 9 of the Stargate Universe? Let’s hope so.

  5. Because of Scheduling in the US the Scifi Channel here wont be showing anymore new eps until 2010. David are you able to find out wether Chn 10 is bound by that as well or will they jump into the next season??
