January 31st and counting

Seven and TEN will likely launch their big new shows in the week of January 31st.

Packed to the Rafters and Underbelly are all coming “later in the year” according to a story in today’s Herald Sun.

Instead Seven will unveil Cougar Town and My Kitchen Rules before ratings begin on February 8th.

If the last few years are anything to go by, Seven relentlessly plugs its upcoming slate during the Australian Open, then kicks them off in the week in between the Open and the start of ratings. This year should prove no exception.

TEN has also used the last week of summer to get a head start on key shows and will likely do the same with So You Think You Can Dance Australia and The Biggest Loser.

The Australian Open ends on Sunday January 31st.

Nine has a tendency to wait until the main game begins before hauling out its big guns.

The Winter Olympics are staged from February 12-28 (US), which is expected to delay Nine’s key titles. V is a likely contender for March which would sync in well with the return of 4 episodes in the US. Underbelly could also return in March -Nine is already running promos for both shows.

Easter’s two weeks of non ratings begins March 28th.

  1. Having seen the previews of V, I give it 2-3 episodes at 9:30, then it’ll move to 11pm (or something like that), 2-3 there, then maybe 2 at a stupid timeslot (2am) on GO!, then axed.

Personally though, I question why they even got the rights! Seems very hit & miss.

  2. I hope that V gets a good timeslot… say Monday 9:30 maybe? That way it has the lead-in The Mentalist. I really hope V snaps the trend of sci-fi failures on 9, V’s pilot is by far the bes pilot I’ve seen, ever. I also really hope COugar Town suceeds, ABC America really has offered some of the better shows this season, Cougar Town, Modern Family, V, etc

  3. I don’t care what Nine do with the edited Top Gear, I’ve seen the full UK version of the latest series including the 76 minute challenge special, which Nine will probably stretch to 120 minutes with ads LOL

  4. I’ll give V 4 weeks on nine. The way sci fi has rated in the past in australia, especially on nine (fringe, sarah connor cronicles etc) and the way nine screws with its viewers when it doesn’t rate, i will be astonished if V lasts more than 4 weeks on nine before they start moving it around and off the screens.

  5. @Regan: knowing Channel 9, they will probably show a load of older repeats first before the latest series that is on at the moment in th UK! Either that or do a “Gordon Ramsay” and show three or four episodes a week with a mix of new and repeats which will be out of order.

  6. Hopefully, Ten won’t air Dance on January 31 to avoid a Ratings Crush Unlike Last Year with all of that Sport going on. I’m Worried they’ll might clash with the Australian Open Mens Final in Primetime Again like last year, Network Ten, can we have the Season Premiere of Dance on a Wednesday this year so i can watch the Tennis and Cricket?

  7. Not surprised that Nine are waiting until after the Olympics to launch their shows. I’m still really interested in hearing how much of their schedule will be devoted to the Winter Olympics. Is it going to be the whole night, besides News and ACA? That could possibly be too much. But then again, Seven had their coverage at 9:30 after Desperate Housewives, Dancing with the Stars and Lost and they probably would have done better if they had had the coverage at an earlier time. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. My prediction is that the Winter Olympics will be a huge success for Nine.

  8. Cougar Town is good and the last eps was great to see but no spoilers here. V is okay but not over the top, anyone willing to lay bets as to how quickly Nine moves it to GO! or late night? But what about Top Gear Nine? SBS only has the rights to the show for another week, If I was them I’d have it on 5 nights a week right now!
