Jeremy Irons will star in The Borgias, a new historical drama to be produced by Showtime in the US. It will be his first ongoing series role in television.
The 13 part series, to be written by Tudors creator Michael Hirst, is already being seen as the successor to his hit drama. Quite where this leaves his other Showtime project, which will revolve around the Camelot legend, is unclear.
Set in Italy in 1492 The Borgias follows a powerful crime family headed by patriarch Rodrigo Borgia (Irons).
Showtime entertainment president Robert Greenblatt told media, “I can guarantee you’ve never seen a family quite like this before, and nor could you make up the outrageous twists and turns of their epic saga.”
Film director Neil Jordan will executive produce and direct first two episodes.
The series is expected to air in 2011.

You’re quite correct. Rodrigo Borgia is the main villain of Assassin’s Creed II.
Awesome! Jeremy Irons will make a fantastic Pope. Can’t wait to see who’ll play Cesar and Lucrezia. Although, I’m a little worried about the show’s similarity to Game of Thrones. I hope both shows do well.
Jeremy would make a good foe for Dexter…
Isn’t this sort of where Assassin’s Creed 2 was set? I think Borgia even got a few mentions.
I’m a sucker for these series so will look forward to 2011 🙂
Thanks David.
