NBC ramps up drama slate. Conan may jump.

Leno's failure leads to new projects from David E. Kelley, David Shore and Jerry Bruckheimer. Meanwhile Conan has apparently chatted to FOX.

In the wake of its announcement that Leno is leaving the 10pm slot, NBC has wasted no time in picking up 6 dramas from heavyweight names including David E. Kelley, David Shore and Jerry Bruckheimer. Some had already been touted as potential projects.

They are as follows:

Kindreds, written ‘on spec’ by Kelley, follows a curmudgeonly ex-patent lawyer and his group of misfit associates as their lives come together to form an unconventional kind of law practice. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and David E. Kelley Prods., was taken to NBC on Tuesday and, in a competitive situation, NBC closed a deal Friday.

Prime Suspect, from UMS and ITV, centers on a courageous female detective who investigates complex mysteries in a politically explosive big city. Steinberg and Erwin Stoff are executive producing.

– The new Rockford Files, from UMS and Steve Carell’s Carousel Prods., centres on Jim Rockford, a roguish private eye who tackles the dangerous, quirky and unpredictable cases that no other detective wants to handle. Shore and Carell are executive producing.

The Event, from UMS, features multiple points of view and follows a regular fellow throw in a large government conspiracy. Steve Stark is executive producing, with Wauters co-exec-producing.

Chase, from WBTV and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, based on a real-life group in the American Southwest, follows a fugitive apprehension team of U.S. Marshals that tracks down the nation’s most notorious criminals. Jennifer Johnson wrote the script and is executive producing with Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman.

Love Bites, from UMS and Working Title Films, is executive produced by Chupack, Timothy Bevan, Eric Fellner and Shelley.

NBC is also said to be developing a new Law and Order spin-off for Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Conan O’Brien is understood to have already had talks with FOX, which is on record as being interested in him

“This level of sh- – -iness was not expected,” one source told the NY Post.

“He’s done a great job for NBC. He moved his entire staff, he moved his family to LA. And five months later, they repay him like this?”

As it stands now, the source added, “Conan would be happier somewhere else.”

  1. If NBC dump Conan for Leno then it will be the biggest mistake they have ever made!

Does anyone know if Conan has been getting better ratings on The Tonight Show than Leno?

  2. Why does US Late Night TV have such a history of dramas and late night war?

There’s certainly a level of intensity around these late night time slots that doesn’t exist here in Oz. Most networks are getting the infomercials ready in the times the shows go to air.

I can’t help but wonder if this is all a publicity stunt. Leno’s show was always going to fail. Time to retire like you promised us all 5 years ago Jay.

  3. Apparently there’s some FOX affiliates not interested in Conan (see link). FOX might be interested, but affiliates are lukewarm.

For those who don’t know, the vast majority of FOX stations have syndicated programming (like ‘Family Guy’, ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Two And A Half Men’ and ‘Seinfeld’) from 11pm which rate quite well. Will Conan be able to do better??

  4. The only bright side to all this drama – these jokes!

  5. Seven here will be rubbing their hands together, with most of that content being done inhouse through Universal that will mean more content for seven network!

  6. I forgot to add that I hope NBC give the new show Parenthood a chance and I guess with holes to fill it has more going for it now… hope seven airs it quickly but I have a feeling this will be held over until the 2nd half of the year.

  7. @ jed..thinking the same thing. Fer crying out loud Another legal drama about quirky lawyers..spare me!

As for Conan he should just jump ship. NBC should just dump Leno for good his time is over. If they lose Conan over this they’ll regret it.

  8. NY Post is hardly a reputable source as it’s owned by news corp which owns fox and has an agenda. Leno is going to retire permanently one day so nbc will be screwed ,more so again. Poor Carson Daily looks like he has been bumped off the schedule all together!

  9. I used to watch Leno because he got the bigger guests, and Conan because he was funny and entertaining. Now that Conan is getting the big guests, Leno has no appeal to me. If they lose Conan to keep Leno happy, they are morons.
