Talent shows: talk or touchdown?

Kyle to Australia's Got Talent? Mark Holden recommending Idol rests? Talent shows are all talk lately.

Seems everyone is talking about talent shows lately. Will Australian Idol return? Who’s judging on Australia’s Got Talent? Should The X Factor make a return?

On the weekend there was speculation Kyle Sandilands could be headed for Australia’s Got Talent. News Limited newspapers quoted the former Idol judge’s manager as saying all three commercial networks were courting him.

“And some of the shows he’s looking at might surprise people. We’re talking to all the commercial networks — this year will show that there’s life beyond Australian Idol — or perhaps even in something involving Idol.

If he went to AGT it could mean time up for Tom Burlinson -or if Red Symons was heading back to Hey Hey it’s Saturday another place would open up. Symons and Sandilands on the same show would surely double up on the ‘nasty judge’ role.

Meanwhile former Idol judge Mark Holden agrees TEN’s show should be rested and revamped for 2011.

Officially no decision has been made on the talent show, despite media speculation as to what may yet transpire.

Holden, now a barrister, remains supportive of the show and TV talent quests.

“It gives young kids an opportunity to become recording artists and make a name for themselves,” he told the Herald Sun.

“I’m very proud of my work on the show. It’s a brilliantly produced show. I have high hopes that it can be reinvented if it came back with an entirely new cast and crew.”

But he also wants to see The X Factor in its place. He says himself, Ian “Dicko” Dickson, Marcia Hines and Kyle Sandilands should be back as its judges. But where’s the reinvention there?

Earlier this month he also backed Jay Dee Springbett, saying he would evolve after his first year.

January is surely part of the silly season, but it would be great to have some clarity on all these rumours soon.

  1. @Ell Kyle did not kill Idol or Big Brother. Big Brother was past it when he showed up, and his leaving Idol proved to be the nail in the coffin of dying Idol.

The fact that Kyle is so divisive – like Sam Newman or Alan Jones – is why he works. Just as many people love him as hate him, just look at his radio ratings. So as long as he pulls audiences, networks will want him.

  2. Just don’t let Kyle near kids. I’d dare say, there’s a bunch of concerned parents of prodigy’s, who won’t let their kids audition, let alone perform in front of Sandilands.

Seven, rehire Jamie Dunn for this role. Agro’s Got Talent, while Kyle probably has none.

  3. Australia’s Got Talent judged by Australia’s least talented person. How strange. I don’t understand why any network would be chasing him. I don’t agree with Mark Holden either. If X factor did come back why on earth would you want those 4 judges. Some new faces please.

  4. Mark Holden has his own recording label so when he says that TV talent quests gives an opportunity for others to get recording contracts or make a name for themselves, it seems insincere to me as the majority of contestants are never heard of again & those that make it end up signing contracts that leave the artists with little profit.

He is just trying to sell the idea of TV talent quests & convince people to stick with TV talent quests so he can be part of Idol again.

  5. they should just give up on the idea that talent show are any good these days. clearly they are not.

the networks that are trying to chase kyle have rocks in their heads by the looks of it. he clueless when it comes to finding talent

  6. Australia’s Got Talent is no place for Kyle Sandilands. In fact, television is no place for Kyle Sandilands. On a scary note, what does 9 want him for?

  7. mmm, Dannii Minogue is quite the A-Lister in the UK these days thanks to her gig on X-Factor, i find it hard to believe she was risk that by being on a judging panel with someone as gaff prone and controversial as Kyle Sandilands

  8. Wikipedia’s Australian Idol, artivle still has “Following poor ratings in 2009, Network Ten cancelled the 2010 season. A decision will be made later in the year as to whether or not the show will be resurrected in 2011.”
