Veteran actor James Mitchell, best known as the patriarch Palmer Cortlandt on US soap All My Children, passed away on Friday. He was 89.
He died of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, complicated by pneumonia.
Mitchell appeared on the long running soap for a mammoth 31 years as “the perfect villain.”
But he got his start on Broadway as a dancer in shows including Brigadoon, Carousel, Paint Your Wagon, Funny Girl and The King and I. He was also in the film version of Oklahoma.
Although he hadn’t appeared on All My Children much in the last few years, he recently joined a 40th anniversary special in January.
7TWO is currently airing All My Children, weekdays at 1pm.
