ABC airs the Winter Paralympics in March with a half hour highlights package each night of the competition.

ABC Sport presenter Shaun Giles will host the ABC’s coverage of the 2010 Paralympic Games in Vancouver in March.

It will be repeated each evening at 11:30pm on ABC1, and will be available on ABC iView. A website will also be hosted at abc.net.au/paralympics.

The games begin with a half-hour package of highlights from the Opening Ceremony, hosted by Giles with commentary by Steve Robilliard and Australia’s first female winter Paralympian, Emily Jansen.

It all starts Saturday March 13 at 6.30pm on ABC1.

  1. I am furious that we are not getting full coverage of the Paralympics. CTV had enough advertising about it and now they only have bits and pieces of it that they will show. With all the channels on the TV you would think somebody could have done full coverage. The Paralympians are just as deserving of full coverage as our regular Olympians. Very annoyed that we can’t watch every event!

  2. This makes me sad! I was a huge fan of the olympics and wanted to watch the paralympics just as much! Paralympians work just as hard as Olympians and deserve to be praised for it, and I know people would love to watch them! I monoski myself and I would love to watch the alpine monoskiing and it just isn’t fair that tv channels don’t care as much about them as they do the olympics!

  3. Pathetic. With the number of channels now allocated to the ABC, would it hurt to give a bit more coverage to a refreshing alternative to the usual run of the mill sports churned out every week? They could even slot it into the early morning periods. What about ABC3 – like newtaste said, it doesn’t even show anything after 9pm, surely the Paralympics could fit in to a rating suitable for kids (especially if the commentators are half reasonable).

  4. this sux, i wanna watch the paralympics just as much as the normal olympics. and im sure everybody will be blown away by how cool the adaptive alpine sports are too. thats if we had the chance to watch it!

  5. What is wrong with TV these days….I agree with the comment made that these athletes put in just as much hardwork, sweat and effort as any other athlete without a disability yet all we’re getting is half an hour of highlights each day? And what with it moving from channel nine to ABC anyway? Shame on channel 9 for not showing it at all and shame on ABC for disregarding these amazing athletes!! Sort it out! Ha and like you all Im sure the kids will get over one of the 3 channels not showing programmes….Its only for 1 week too not a few weeks.

  6. Why bother ABC.
If 30 mins is all your going to show then scrap it & let some competent channel show it.
The ABC has 3+ chanels yet can’t make 1 available for 6 hours a day.

  7. As far as I know, the Paralympics aren’t on the anti-siphoning list. If anything, commercial broadcasters have respected the ABC’s position.

The ABC don’t get many big events these days (who remembers when, the only place to see the Commonwealth Games, was the ABC?) and it’s in the station’s best interest to retain them as it is the only major sports event not on current anti-siphoning regulations, and is great content for digital channels.

  8. foxtell dont want to show the Paralympic summer or winter. It sad but true. They showed the Olympic for a price charging extra to most of their costumors to see the Olympics.

We do not get as much coverage of the Winter Olympic as the Summer Olympics
again because it smaller and we dont have a big team.

  9. I am glad that they are covering some of the Paralympic games on t.v. I would like more coverage. I think an hour a day would be great. Especially the ceremony and finals of ice sledge hockey. I want to see the best of the skiing in each class and event. I would like at least 75% or more to be sport. and no more then 25% of talking. I think the less hours is because we have a small team and the winer paralympic games is smaller then the summer games.

  10. If 30 mins is all that we get then this needs to come off the list and let foxtel show it.
Absolutely disgraceful that athletes who put in just as much training are religated to a second class coverage.

  11. Wow lets give a big hand to the ABC, giving us a total of 30 minutes of Paralympic coverage a day, whilst having three channels of children’s programs. The ABC could have easily put this live on ABC2, but oh noes the kiddies wont be able to see their shows for a few weeks. How pathetic ABC …

  12. Laughing at Johnson’s comment below! The ABC would rather implode than sacrifice some children’s programming for a couple of weeks. For the love of God, man! Won’t you think of the children!? 🙂

  13. Why not put this on ABC2 Live. Surely they have the right to at least do that. I thought they would show so much more than just 30 minutes. I am surprised the opening and closing ceremonies wont be shown live also. I guess i will have to hope its shown online somewhere

  14. The ABC should show more from the Winter Paralympics instead of the standard 30-minute highlights program (even though some children’s program timeslots may be sacrificed). I hope the opening and closing ceremonies will be streamed in full on the Vancouver 2010 website.

  15. Half an hour every night?!? That’s not enough!!! I often find the paralympics more competitive and better to watch than the standard Olympics… shame that ABC doesn’t think the same.

Oh well. At least we won’t have to worry about Eddie and Mick making jokes about their disabilities…!
