Leckie: Cougar Town is “a s*** show”
The always colourful Seven CEO David Leckie had quite a bit to say when he joined an interview with Matthew Johns and the Sunday Tele.

Some startling quotes from the always colourful Seven CEO David Leckie appear in today’s Sunday Telegraph.
During an interview with Matthew Johns, Leckie reportedly walked into the room with circulation figures on Pacific magazines, part of the Seven group. He impressed upon Johns, and by the sound of things reporter Phil Rothfield, how much promotion he could give the new NRL show Seven is planning for 7:30pm Thursdays.
In doing so, he revealed quite a bit more about other shows.
Here are some select Leckie quotes from the Sunday Telegraph article:
“We’re going to promote the s*** out of this f***ing show. We’ve gotta let people know how good it’s going to be,” he said.
“I want a couple of million a night. It’s the truth. That’s what I’m hoping for. I’ve known Matthew on and off for over 10 years and I’ve known (John) Singleton since I was born. I personally think there’s a big hole for a show like this and we’re putting it in a great timeslot.
“We’re having an argument about the name. Singo rang me 10 minutes ago about the name. I told him to f*** off – it’s my network.”
He also let drop his thoughts on Cougar Town.
“It will be one of the most creative moves we’ve made. We’re in very good shape at this network. OK, the Cougar Town, it’s a s*** show but we promote it and we get nearly 1.4 million watching it.”
Finally he adds:
“I look at it this way: Matthew in my view is an outstanding television talent and, my God, we’re very happy he’s here. We’ve got Kyle Sandilands as well. So, f***ing hell, do you think I’m worried about Matthew? Kyle. He’s on fire!”
Is it a worry that the Seven boss knew he was attending a media interview or more of a worry that perhaps he didn’t?

Hope your Matty Johns show is the biggest failure in television history.
@David & Anthony : Apologies. I stand corrected.
I agree with him. I saw a bit of Cougar Town and it was pretty ordinary at best. And I’m sure the new footy show will be of the same calibre.
The “old” 9 at least had some good shows in good timeslots, ER, CSI, Friends, all those Australian-produced dramas… now what do they have? Channel 7 garbage, knocked off…. and endless repeats of Two and a Half Men… their only decent show left from the “old” 9, which btw was much better than any other era of TV I’ve personally seen, is Getaway.
Cougar Town a s**t show? Okay it isn’t the best show ever, it won’t land in my personal top 10 favorite TV shows list, but it’s better than anything else they could’ve promoted the crap out of during the tennis… they didn’t even bother to import any shows this year apart from Cougar Town and FlashForward, at least 9 took a chance and bought the rights to a crapton of shows, granted 75% of them won’t get more than 13 episodes… (Human Target, Past Life, Forgotten, Hank, Miami Medical) they at least tried something. Seriously, the guy who commissions the production of Border and the “COPS” knock-offs is taking a swipe people who have at least taken time to write up a script instead of chucking a camera somewhere and putting in subtitles….
it really is a pity that punching a stupid person in the face is still considered as assault and will get me arrested….
If only the Ten CEO would say the same about the 7PM Project and put it out of it’s misery. It’s no surprise Ten always comes at least 3rd.
@ Louise – that’s because everyone who worked at “old” Nine now works at Seven!
@ louise – not really surprising when you remember that Leckie was the head of “old Nine”
that headline isn’t misleading mac, Leckie said exactly that!
Seven has got gold under their nose and should do a show based on a Leckie type character. He’s a hoot! And by the way, he was one of the most successful, astute people in the industry – he’s just getting a bit long in the tooth.
Isn’t that headline misleading? He doesn’t say “it’s a s*** show”, he says he’s going to “promote the s*** out of this f***ing show” which is a different message.
Mac I think you better read it again?
is it me or is seven sounding and smelling more and more like the ‘Old’ nine everyday. arrogant and out of touch!
I agree with Leckie, Cougar Town is a s*** show. I don’t know whether it was solely down to Channel 7’s editing, but the show seemed to randomly jump from scene with scene without much of a “pause” in-between. Very, very, very odd.
I felt like I was watching a 2 hour program that had been very poorly edited into 42 minutes (or however long the actual “show” time was minus the multitude of ads shown by Channel 7 which at one point appeared to include a promo for “Cougar Town”).
Only Kuttyswood could link a story about an American sitcom and a NRL Panel show, both airing in primetime, to the axing of a mid-afternoon local magazine show on a rival network in queensland…
sounds like leckie is smarter than most as he gets free publicity everytime he opens his mouth. whether he said couger town was good or bad is irrelevant as everyone here and elsewhere will read about it and remember it.
I don’t think Cougar Town is a “s*** show”, but Seven do have a lot of other “s** show[s]” that they do get a lot of people to watch – Border Security and the the interminable tsunami of other mind-numbing, boring, half-hour factual series. Leckie seems to be taking this for granted. What happens when viewers refuse to tolerate this “s***”?
OMG are you serious? I should apply for the job of CEO at channel 7 atleast I would be more proffessional than he is. All that swearing and thinking 2 million will watch a NRL show is outragous. OMG seriously Leckie what is wrong with you?
Doesn’t bode well for the future of “The White Room” if they are planning on putting the Matthew Johns crap on at 7.30 Thursdays in 3 weeks time…
