Nine slates ‘Top Gear special’

Nine has slated a 2 hr 'Top Gear special' consisting of one new episode and one old.

Top Gear fans aren’t likely to be cheeered by this one.

Nine has a 2 hr Top Gear special to play on Tuesday March 2nd, consisting of one new episode and one old.

But instead of proceeding with Episode 2 of the 14th Series, it has Episode 4* with Guy Ritchie.

It will be followed by S5E1 from 2004. Both will be packaged as a ‘Special’ by Nine.

Next week the show is off due to Cricket.

It looks like Nine is intent to draw upon the back catalogue of episodes given it only has 6 more new eps in the current series.

Clarkson travels to Belfast to conduct an extremely thorough test of the Renault sport Twingo. Meanwhile, Hammond investigates ways to speed up your next summer. Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie does a round on the Top Gear track. Also, includes the interstate road-trip in the USA where for only $1000, they must buy a typical American used car.

It airs at 7:30pm.

  1. Given up. I don’t watch Top Gear any more, and last night I wanted to watch the new Ben Elton show, but due to below I gave up and turned the TV off

    Stopped watching Top Gear as…..
is it a new episode? is it the first time this episode is on channel 9 even though it has been shown on SBS?
is this the new series? are the shows in sequence?
is there an add break every 10 mins? are there ad breaks in the middle of a story?

Given up…. not in the least bit enjoyable any more. will wait for when SBS starts showing it again.

do you guys just do focus groups or surveys? either way you ain’t getting it right.

  2. Channel 9 are now showing repeats of things SBS did last year. Promoted as the first time ever the boys race. Well they did it last year. Why do they pay heaps for the rights and then not show the latest series. Trust channel nine to stuff up their programming and wreck a great show.

  3. Nine has a 2 hr Top Gear special to play on Tuesday March 2nd, consisting of one new episode and one old.

Im confused there both repeats on Tuesday, how is one new?

  4. How damn stupid is Channel 9!!!! Top Gear is one of the highest viewed programmes and guess what in all the wisdom they have shown one episode, one, then show cricket!!!!???! I cannot fathom the stupidity, replace a top rating show with, um- cricket!!!!!??????

  5. Craig (2:20pm),

The funny thing is TV Week are owned by PBL Media, yet one of their very own TV channels’ do everything in their power to undermine the value of the magazine with these regular programming changes. For PBL’s sake, they better hope most of TV Week’s readers care more about the stories & pictures than the actual TV guide.

  6. Nine are dumb!

Just got TV Week and next week there is a write up for TG on Tuesday, only problem is it’s for the 2nd ep and not the 4th with Guy Ritchie. So people will tune in expecting to see them build an electric car and they will be doing something totally different. Must be frustrating for TV Week and the PR department at Nine.

  7. Nine are not dumb. Annoying, but not dumb.

Check the ratings each week as the season progresses. If there’s even a (downward) blip because of this I’ll eat Clarkeson’s shorts.

Channel Nine know that everyone will get all huffy about it, then sit down and watch it anyway. They’ll meddle with all sorts of ideas trying to pull that extra point or two away from other networks. And in all likelihood, it won’t affect the TG ratings at all. The fans are too loyal.

They might be annoying, but they’re not dumb.

  8. Why aren’t Channel Nine showing the TopGear episodes in order?? Someone has to tell David Gyngell (CEO of Nine) that the fans arn’t happy what you’re doing to this show!!

Pull up or else you’ll see the ratings will plummet!!

  9. Networks all over the world actually show episodes out of order of any type of show, even syndications. It’s common practice for them to rearrange episodes to show/save the high rating ones (anticipated or from past figures) for when they want/need it most. Unfortunate, but that’s what happens.

  10. Thankyou Ch9 for restoring my faith that your programming department is staffed completely by F-wits. TG was the only show that I watched on 9 last week. It will now be none.

Channels 7 and 10 are far from perfect (very) with their apparent lack of respect for their audiences (start times, tiny or no credits, moving shows, etc, etc) but somehow, you manage to continually be worse than both. Quite a feat!

@Nathan: Three and a Half Men – you neglected the Stigmeister.
    @MattC: I wish I had written that.

  11. Well I’m lucky then, over the last few months I’ve been recording TG on BBC Knowledge, as we as SBS so I have most eps now of the current format TG.

They need to run in sequence because often the refer to a previous test in the series and at the end they sometimes say what is coming up next week, although is Nine cuts the end bit this doesn’t really matter.

Yes Nine really screwed up Flashpoint showing ‘sneak peeks’ which were entire episodes before someone gave them a dictionary to find the meaning of the words. Then showed the 2nd ep first leaving people wondering who all there people were when they missed the pilot.

  12. Two days ago I asked how long before 9 does it’s usual trick of showing a series out of order, incomplete and/or in shifting timeslots. Looks like it took them exactly one episode. I think that’s a record even for them? As for who cares, well, fans of the show do, that’s who. Any show deserves to be aired as the production team intended, that’s just good form.

The BBC won’t care, they get paid either way, so forget that avenue of appeal. 9 don’t care either, they think they have a captive audience which they can treat with contempt (as any old time STTNG fan will attest). They forget that this isn’t the 1990s and that folks can and will source their TV elsewhere if they get mucked about too much.

  13. “Who cares if its out of sequence. Its not like there’s a running story line through the series. im happy as long as its a new ep.”

@ Partizan – what this demonstrates is 9’s constant inability to show any series in sequence and in full.

I think they started Flashpoint with Ep 4 last year and then the next week showed Ep1 and then wondered why people stopped watching as the show jumped all over the place.
