7TWO will air the 1999 ABC series Barry Humphries’ Flashbacks, a four part series that charts the evolution of Australian society from the 1950s to the 1980s through the eyes of an Aussie legend.

Flashbacks draws upon Barry’s own observations, and those of his alter egos Dame Edna Everage, Sir Les Patterson and Sandy Stone, to review the people, events, obsessions, fads, fashions and music that defined Australia.

Edna bestows her wisdom on interior decoration, social etiquette and immigration. Sir Les talks politics, the sexual revolution and his friendships with those at the top, while Sandy Stone ponders nervous breakdowns, the arrival of television and Australia’s own lamington.

We also get to know the real Barry Humphries, a man of immense wit and charm, as he takes us on his unique guided tour of the Flashbacks era.

Join Barry has he takes a comedic look back at Australia from the 1950s to the 1980s.

It premieres 7:30pm Thursday April 8 on 7TWO.

  1. I agree!

Like me, & you think Australia was nothing more than a cultural wasteland until the early ’90s, then you’ll love these four episodes. It’s funny & informative, but not too critical. I particularly liked one of Humphries’ alter egos called ‘Retired Man (Deceased).’ Haha!

I did notice ABC iView had Flashbacks up a couple of months ago as one of their ‘webisodes,’ so I guess television & Internet rights are handled as a separate concern?

Not that there’s anything wrong with 7TWO going down this path, but with this, along with Heartbeat & some Micheal Palin documentaries, they are starting to look more like 1990s version of ABC1. When will 7TWO start screening Late Show repeats, I wonder?
