Airdate: Movie: Not Quite Hollywood

In the 1970s 'Ozploitation cinema' was chockful with Aussie sex, violence and horror.

Here is a definite must-see for fans of Australian cinema. Not Quite Hollywood is an irreverent look at the burgeoning Australian film industry in the 1970s.

Winner of an AFI for best documentary in 2008, the film looks at ‘Ozploitation’ cinema; a time when Australian cinema got its gear off and showed the world a full-frontal explosion of sex, violence, and horror.

This is not your usual documentary full of boring anecdotes by dull historians, instead these are the real stories from the people who were there – wild, trail-blazing cinematic mavericks who snubbed their nose at authority, made their own rules and in the process introduced the car chase, karate kicks, BMX bikes and the water-bed to Australian cinema screens.

Includes interviews with Quentin Tarantino, Dennis Hopper, Jamie Lee Curtis, Barry Humphries, Phillip Adams, Steve Bisley, Graeme Blundell, Barry Crocker, Bob Ellis, Rebecca Gilling, John Michael Howson, John Jarratt, Barry Jones, George Lazenby, Hal McElroy, George Miller, Judy Morris, Fred Schepisi, Sigrid Thornton, John Waters, Leigh Whannell, Susannah York, Bruce Beresford and Wendy Hughes.

Not Quite Hollywood will be followed at 11.45pm by The Adventures of Barry McKenzie – a classic example of ‘Ozploitation’ cinema from 1972, directed by Bruce Beresford and starring Barry Crocker, Barry Humphries, Spike Milligan and Peter Cook.

It airs Saturday, 27 March at 10.00pm on SBS ONE.

  1. They say that Mad Max is porn for people who like fast cars, well this doco is like porn for people who like Ozploitation cinema. One of the greatest doco’s to come out of this country in a long time, it opened up this whole genre to a new generation. Now when I mention movies like the naked bunyip, plugg and pacific banana, I don’t get blank stares, but strange looks.

  2. One of the best docos/movies ever! Even if you haven’t seen 3/4 of the movies they talk about, it’ll make you want to go out and see them (check the Ozploitation box sets)
