Airdate: Time Team America

ABC1 will air an American version of Time Team with archaeological digs in the USA.

ABC1 will air an American version of Time Team which aired on PBS last July.

The series, which sees a team of specialists carry out an archaeological dig, is based on the Channel 4 original presented by actor Tony Robinson.

A fascinating and energetic history lesson with a team of expert scientists digs deep into the trenches of America’s most intriguing archaeological sites.

The team use their expert skills and the latest high-tech tools to uncover the buried secrets of their assigned dig.

This week, it’s Roanoke Island North Carolina, where the first hardy and hopeful colonists were sent from England to make a go of it in the New World. When the English supply ships returned in three years, they found the settlement and Fort Raleigh empty and the colonists gone. The fate of the Roanoke colonists remains one of the most chilling and maddening questions of American history.

Time Team America spent three days at Fort Raleigh in pursuit of evidence that will put the Roanoke ghost to rest and establish where the first colony of America was actually located.

It begins 6:05pm Tuesday, 13th April on ABC1.

  1. I agree with Bradley’s comment but I’ll still give it a bit more of a chance. Maybe it’s going to take some time for the U.S Team to get into their stride and become entertaining as well as knowledgeable. It doesn’t auger well though as there was no talk of heading down to the pub.

  2. I saw about half of this tonight… it really wasn’t a patch on the original show: very dry, dull stuff, and with none of the humour of the UK version. But what do I know, maybe this is the kind of thing they prefer to watch over there.

  3. I don’t mind American remakes if they’re good (The Office & Coupling), so I’ll check this out. PBS also produce their own version of Antiques Roadshow if anyone thinks the BBC one needs a rest? Nine, or the ABC channels could air it?

  4. I have seen clips of this. In my opinion, much like the US “Who Do You Think You Are?”, they lost something in the translation. Without the quirky Phil Harding, Mick Aston, or Tony Robinson, there’s no comparison.
