The Comedy Channel will switch to widescreen on April Fool's Day, April 1st.

The Comedy Channel will switch to widescreen on April Fool’s Day, April 1st.

“Mark it in your diaries and rev up your blogs – The Comedy Channel is set to commence 16.9 widscreen transmission from Thursday April 1 at 5.30am. And no, it’s not an April Fools joke. Promise. Unless something goes horribly wrong. Nahhhh, she’ll be appples. Wider apples,” says its website.

This week the channel also gets into the spirit of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, of which it is a Festival Partner.

At 9pm on Thursday the channel screens Australia’s Funniest, a one hour guide to the picks the festival, and at 10pm anarchic Canadian comedian Tom Green selects his festival favourites in Tom Green’s Best Of the Fest.

  1. About damn time. This is way to long in the making. I mean 80% or so of their programming is in widescreen. These channels have made a mockery of the time its taken to get into widescreen. Same with Arena and TV1. Two of the biggest Pay TV channels and still not in widescreen. At least Comedy has joined the party a few years late.

  2. It seems at this point it would have made more economic sense to go to HD, which will eventually happen in the next few years.
The cost difference between upgrading broadcast facilities to 16×9 SD and 16×9 HD is now negligible. And Foxtel (owner of Comedy) already has some equipment and facilities in place. A lot of Comedy’s programming like all the stuff from Comedy Central in the US and US talk shows is now in HD too.
Odd move to not go HD.
