Daryl “surprised” by Gold Logie snub

Daryl Somers admits he is surprised his name was left off this year's shortlist of Logie contenders -but he is in good company.

A tactful Daryl Somers has spoken about being left off TV Week’s Logie voting list this year.

Somers hosted two Hey Hey reunion specials last year that attracted stellar ratings and wide acclaim. He wasn’t listed as an option for Most Popular Presenter, which subsequently rules him out of the Gold Logie race.

“I’m just pleased the show is nominated -you’ll have to ask TV Week why I am not on the list,” Somers has told the Herald Sun.

“Maybe I’m not their demographic. I have to admit I was surprised – I thought I might be on the list when I saw the show was nominated.”

Co-star John Blackman called his omission “an absolute disgrace”.

“Of course he should have been nominated. He put in a sterling effort. But nothing surprises me about this industry any more,” Blackman said.

“I am pleased the show’s been nominated, though, because it’s a team effort.”

As TV Tonight pointed out last month, there are a number of names absent from Logies contention in the Popular categories: They include Ed Kavalee, John Waters, Tom Oliver, Ryan Moloney, Dave Hughes, Steve Bisley, Alan Fletcher, Sam Clark, Cornelia Frances, Ajay Rochester, Brian McFadden, Hamish Blake, Andy Lee, Kestie Morassi, James Morrison, David Reyne, Kim Watkins, Tim Ross, Merrick Watts, Andrew Denton, Henry Roth, Jimmy Barnes, Larry Emdur, Kylie Gillies, Matt Passmore, Peter Berner, Peter Helliar, Andrew Daddo, Jonathan Holmes, Cariba Heine, Garry McDonald and Magda Szubanski.

But Somers and those who are in his company would do well to look to their own networks for an explanation.

The Logies shortlist is drawn up from names submitted by networks but TV Week does limit the amount of nominations they can forward per category, and denies voters the chance to add “Other” names.

The Logies is also yet to induct Somers into its Hall of Fame.

The 2010 nominations will be announced on March 29th.

  1. @ Andrew

“And as David has already pointed out, this isn’t even new “news” anyway, it was raised ages ago on this site and others.”

    David said:

“Somers should have been on that list. Logies should have added an “Other” option.”

    and
“Matt you are twisting my words.
Go back to this article and see why there should be an Other option as there used to be historically. In fact the article above indicates plenty of names that could have been voted for by “Other.” I raised the same questions last year.
There are 71 names for Presenters for which both Somers and Wilson were two left out.”

David never said it was old news,, but rather not a new problem as he sees it.

so it is news, albeit ongoing.

  2. Where was this “hissy fit”? The article says he was “surprised”. That is all. Not “unhappy”. Not “annoyed”. No mention of any tantrum or any tears about it. Nothing.

And Daryl -might- be an egotist. i don’t know. Don’t care, really. But that does not come across in this article.

But just read what he’s actually been quoted as saying instead of making up your own assumptions as to what this article is acknowledging. I think the Herald Sun, who have blown up a couple of innocent quotes from Daryl into a full-page article, is actually taking a greater swipe at TV Week over the inequality of the voting process – something which TV Tonight has well established – rather than making any point about Daryl personally.

  3. Your opinions are all valid, but what david was trying to tell some you dense people, is that everyone should be able to score a nomination so it is a fair and even playing field….. and then you all could make your own decision who you choose to vote for the logies.

  4. I think the Hey Hey Reunion shows shouldn’t be even worthy of a Logie as they were nothing special/new, and only on twice. It’s a joke.

Daryl on the other hand is so full of himself he is just exploding of it, and this little hissy fit just reinforces that.
There are probably 200 people in the industry more worthy of a Gold Logie than him even being considered for one. I say suffer in your jocks Daryl!

  5. @ Geoff Field:
Sorry, have to disagree with you though. I think Daryl just has a big ego unless he was joking and it was taken out of context because this is an article, not a video.
BTW – fan mail, I think you’re great on the Kyle and Jackie O Show, it should be called the Kyle, Jackie and Geoff Show. lol.

  6. While I wasn’t trying to twist your words, your comments could be misperceived as less about the system as a whole and more about just Daryl. I’m not saying that’s what you mean but it can come across like that.

I agree with Wilson and alot of those other names but I still disagree about Daryl. 6 hours of airtime shouldn’t warrant a nomination.

  7. man, so many people getting upset over nothing. I actually read the Herald Sun article that this came from and the only quotes that appear to have been attributed to Daryl is that he is pleased that the show got a nomination, and surprised of the omission and that the paper should ask TV Week about it. Hardly the sort of quote to warrant the sort of vileness that has sprung up here. If anything it’s the Herald Sun that’s made a bigger “story” of this, maybe some of the commenters here should take issue with the Herald Sun for making a story out of what is really nothing. And as David has already pointed out, this isn’t even new “news” anyway, it was raised ages ago on this site and others.

  8. “Somers should have been on that list. Logies should have added an “Other” option.”

Is Somers really that big of a deal that an “other ” option should be added for him?

    Come on DK, really?

  9. David, I think you got the title wrong? Daryl was surprised that he was not on the logies list, not necessarily the gold logie list. The title makes him seem to be an egomaniac (which he may well be).

  10. One thing Daryl seems to have never realised is that he isn’t on the mind of others as much as he is on his own.

TV Week don’t have a vendetta against him. They gave him a cover last year. Nine shares the same parent company with him.

The fact that he’s awful is a seperate topic.

  11. On the screens twice, I don’t think that should count. There are so many others, as listed, that should’ve been on it. But that’s the joke of the Logies isn’t it anyway.

  12. Oh poor Daryl, he really thinks the world of himself.

But don’t worry, he’ll claim the Hey Hey logie if/when they win and put it in his private “hail me” trophy cabinet. It wouldn’t be the first time, he went on stage and stole the Dancing with the Stars logie for himself a couple of years back.

  13. sorry david, dont agree. most people watched hey hey reunion for a number of reasons, but daryl played little in that, it was mainly for the segments and curious fact (look how old they are now etc etc). watch there reunions show bomb this year.

As for the other names you mentioned and the shows, well they have to be ingrained in you for them to become a factor. I know presenters by looking at them, but ask me to name what shows those people you named hosts and I’d fail miserably.

But no, somers should not be on the list for 2 shows that had little to do with him.

  14. I think people are being a bit vile towards Daryl. I’m not a great fan of his and largely avoided watching the HHIS reunions last year but I think it is remiss to exclude him from the list of presenters particularly as the reunion shows were so popular with viewers and it did become one of the standout hits of 2009

  15. It’s not about whether Daryl deserves to be on the list, it’s more disturbing that the man even notices after all of these years that he isn’t on a Logies voting list for goodness sake. Why would any secure person with so much success behind him care about something so trivial and make an issue out of it? Seems pitiful to me.
