Next week Insight returns to one of its rare forums with Australian kids, aged 13-25.

No parents allowed – kids from unusual families tell their story.

While the nuclear family is still seen as the norm in Australia, population statistics show that couple families with children are no longer the majority household in Australia.

INSIGHT will hear from young people (between 13 and 25) who have grown up without their mum and dad around. How does their family work? Did they miss out on anything?

Some have two mums or two dads, others have been adopted from overseas or lived with a grandparent, some were conceived using donor sperm, or they were raised in foster care.

Recently the idea of what makes a normal family was hotly debated in Queensland, as the state government legalised surrogacy, extending those rights to single people and same sex couples.

Critics argued that a child was being denied the fundamental right to enter the world with both a mother and a father.

INSIGHT will hear directly from the children of these families.

After the show, viewers can logon to www.sbs.com.au/insight and have their say in the online chat and ask our guests questions about the show.

It airs 7:30pm  Tuesday on SBS ONE.
